DH's name is James, his friends and family call him Jimmy, as do I. People at work call him Jim. No one calls him James really though he will answer to it.

I have the same issue with the names. My name is Jennifer, but I usually go by Jenn. However, in business situations, or when I'm on the phone with someone I don't know, I'll usually say my name is Jennifer. And all the time, the person responds by saying, "Hey Jenn, nice to meet you."
Same for me. I actually don't mind it though - unless I'm talking to a douchey person. Then call me Jennifer.

I am expecting  and the reason I wont name him James is b/c ppl will call him Jimmy. I wanted to name ds Victoria but i hate the nickname Vicki. When I think of baby names I also think of the possible nicknames.

i am in love with the name michaela for when/if i ever have a daughter but i am scared people will call her MICKEY. blech. i think its a tough thing to stop a nickname once it starts.

It's funny....my brother's name is James...some of us call him James, some call him Jim and others call him Jimmy. He answers to all.

No they are not interchangable -
If someone introduces themselves to you as James, they want to be called James - you don't take it upon yourself to call them Jim or Jimmy .......(Not "You" as in the OP, I'm just speaking in general)

I agree completey. My name is Kim, not Kimberly... people always assume it's Kimberly (and I totally understand that) but I've never ever called myself or introduced myself as Kimberly, yet you wouldn't believe the number of people who just go ahead and call me Kimberly (lucky for them it really doesn't bother me, but I could only imagine how it would annoy someone else). I would NEVER assume or call someone something other than what they introduced themselves as.
My FSIL is Jennie, not Jennifer. A few people called her Jennifer in the beginning when she first began to date BIL. It was awkward. If you introduce yourself as something why would someone call you different?

I think most people change the name around - Or in the case of my co worker her husband is Jim and her son is James.

people do this to me also
a woman I work with decided Beth is not a nice name and Elizabeth is better
so she calls me that now
are you kidding??? I hope you don't answer her!! I'd have a choice name for her!!!
My DH's name is Jamie - that's his given name - some people will call him James - ummm - not his name.

Unfortunately....
My husband's names is James and he hates it--I have NO idea why. I hate the name Jim and when we first started dating I only called him James, my friends and family only knew him by James...now--he won. Jim it is. I told him I would NEVER name our kid James bc I cannot stand Jimmy or Jim and I know my in-laws would call him that.

I went to school with a boy named Greg. In 5th grade,we had this really scary strict teacher. She would always call him Gregory and he would gently correct her by saying, "It's Greg". She replied, "Well, I'm going to call you by your full name!" He responded, "Well, on my birth certificate it says Greg!"--she called him Greg for the rest of the year!

My brother is a James. No one calls him James. He likes Jim, but the family call him Jimmy. He will never shake that off, as much as he wants. He will always be Jimmy to us.

My uncle's name is Vincent.... he goes by Jimmie... 
I have a friend from the Philippines. His nickname is Jim, but his real name isn't James.

I think they are interchangeable in the sense that Jim is a nickname for James and if you go by Jim and your name is James then obviously they are interchangeable.
I am a Kathryn and I go by Kate, but legally, I am Kathryn. I only don't like when people make me a Kathy.

like many others have said, I would not assume someone prefers a nickname.
I once dated a guy named Steven who HATED being called Steve. he shortened the name of whoever called him Steve to make his point
