Does Anyone Know About Crepe Myrtle's?

We have these really tiny black bugs. They are not tiny ants. They have a solid body really. This was the closest pic I could get of them.

And the bark has come off in some areas. Is this normal? I'm not sure if this happened last year or not.

And this is what it looks like after we pruned it today. It really needed it but we couldn't get to it over the last two years. I think it's going to look so much nicer this year. There was too much down low and it just looked like a big non taken care of bush or tree. I'll take pics when it blooms this year in August and we will see if it looks nicer or not. Chat Icon

Re: Does Anyone Know About Crepe Myrtle's?

seems like peeling bark is completely normal on a crepe myrtle, according to this link.

not sure about the bugs though. are they just in one area of the tree or all over?

Re: Does Anyone Know About Crepe Myrtle's?

thanks for the link. I will read it.

the bugs were not all over, just on a few branches, at least that I noticed. I will have to look at it again tomorrow and check.

Sorry hon, without a Google search, I really don't know much about them. Chat Icon Isn't this the tree you had the bugs on last year - that looked like white bird poop? I forgot what you told me they were named. Fuzzy scale or something?

Anyway, when I was looking at Crape Myrtles to buy, I did find varieties that had peeling bark but that was a variety named "Natchez" and it had white flowers. I think you should identify what kind you have first, then identify the bugs, and see if all that is normal.

Good luck, it's a gorgeous tree. Chat Icon

No not the same tree. Last year it was our Weeping Cherry with the Cottony Scale on it. "Fuzzy Scale" Chat Icon

It does seem that the peeling bark is normal from what I have read. Now I need to find out about the bugs. I might call back the company that came last year for our Cottony Scale. But if I could just use Neen Oil or something like that I would be a lot happier. Chat Icon
