Those who used lactation consultants...
Do you have anyone you'd recommend? Did you consult a private LC or a support group? I'm looking for referrals. Thanks!

Thanks. Maybe you can. i don't know. i took a BF class b4 DD was born and had an LC in the hospital so I didn't think I'd need an LC, but I've got some concerns. First off, although DD was a natural from day 1, my supply is not adequate for my champion eater. The ped is making me supplement. I'm trying just about everything to get my supply up, but it's not enouh for her. Two, at 6 weeks, it seems like I shouldn't be in as much pain as I am. It seems like most everyone else's experience was no pain by this point. I feel like maybe it has to do w/ the fact that she's trying to get more out than there is. i'd feel better at this point consulting an expert. Sorry so long.

How do you know your supply is not adequate? Is your child is gaining weight and having enough wet - dirty diapers? The more you supplement the less your body will know to produce milk.
Many DR's are so quick to push supplementing and not always so supportive of Breast Feeding  I was in a lot of discomfort for about 8 weeks and now at 3 months all is wonderful and nursing has been a rewarding and beautiful experience. I wouldn't change a thing, it was rough in the beginning but worth! There are a few nursing moms available here that will be glad to support you with any concerns you have

Any LC will tell you BFing is NOT supposed to hurt. Your baby may be a natural but the latch may not be correct. And you shouldn't supplement - your body supplies what is demanded of it. If you don't demand, the supply is not there. Your body will catch up to the baby's demand.
I went to an LC in Babylon - I could get her info if you like.

Many peds want new moms to supplement and honestly many times you don't need to if you are given proper BF help from the ped. Why don't you believe your supply is enough?
Is your baby losing weight?
I highly suggest that you met with an LC. You will really get the confidence you need and if you have a supply problem they will get you pumping and nursing to correct it. I found this person below..

Well, DD is the most content cheerful baby and then all of a sudden she started crying all the time. She'd start crying as soon as she BF. She was still hungry. Like every hour all of a sudden. For the 1st couple of weks she was only hungry every 3 or 4 hours.
i definitely made some mistakes that I know hurt my supply. They say to let the baby nurse for as long as they want, but I have a baby who just likes to ****. In the hosp one night when they brought her to me to feed, every timeI'd try to take her off she'd cry. This went on for about an hour and a half. I finally called for the nurse to ask how do I know when she's had enough and she found out how long we'd be going she said oh no honey, 15 min on each side is plenty, she's using you as a pacifier. So from that point I started removing her nyself. Then, I also asked the ped how do we know she's getting enough. They said to count wet diapers (5 per day). He also said they get enough to sustain themselves in 7 min on each side. so we counted diapers and she had enough and I started only giving her 10 min on each, but I called once that weird crankiness started and the other partner in the practice said probably a growth spurt, she needs to eat more and then suggested he come in for a weight check. At 4 weeks she had noy regained birthweight so alas she was not getting enough and I think cutting all those BF sessions hurt my supply b/c at that point I could only pump 1, 2, or at most 3 ounces depending on time of day. I've started letting her nurse more often and longer and I'm waiting for my supply to catch up, but there are times that she is not happy after BF and she needs an ounce or 2 of the formula to be satisfied. I didn't like the idea, but it's working for now. She gained a whole pound in just 9 days and is back on track, but I don't want to have to supplement permanently. I am going to go to a BF support group that meets near me on Tues and we'll see. I'm trying oatmeal, beer, and fenugreek, and pumping as well. I'm not giving up, just looking for support and/or advice.
