Pedialyte - why does it go bad after 48 hours?
I bought pedialyte about 2-3 weeks ago, made 1 bottle for my son and put it right in the fridge...but it does say "once opened, refrigerate, use within 48 hours" but why? what goes bad about it? such a waste of money every time I buy a big bottle just to make 1 little bottle I end up throwing the rest out.

For example, if someone touches the surface from which the product is poured, any bacteria on the person's hands can be transferred to the product. This is called touch contamination. The bacteria grow slowly at refrigerator temperatures, but over time, the amount of bacteria can become significant. Children with gastroenteritis are at increased risk of a second infection from these bacteria as their immune system is already working to fight the gastroenteritis
they do make pedialyte in a powdered form that you can mix up too...might waste less that way.

Fwiw, we've given dd gatorade and have never had a problem. Our ped said it was fine. They need to be hydrated, kwim? And pedialtye is expensive.

Get the powder- it mixes up 8 oz of pedialyte so you only make as much as you need. A box of 8 is about the same price as the big bottle. And the powder comes in flavors too! My ped said Gatorade has too much sugar so pedialyte is better.

...wouldn't this be the case with ANYTHING you open that needs to be refrigerated though? I smell a money making ploy to get you to buy more!

They make powder so you only have to make 8ozs at a time (they come in packets like crystal lite). Additionally they make juice boxes of it that come in 4 packs. They also make small bottles that come in 4 packs. I have never bought a large bottle it is just a waste.
Just an FYI there are generic versions of pedialyte that they sell I think in CVS that come in juice boxes and the powder packets that are about 1/2 the price of the brand name and work just as well.
Gatoraide is good too but doesn't have the same electrolytes that pedialyte has.
