Brittany Murphy has tied the knot with Simon Monjack, the British writer and director of her latest project, the couple tell PEOPLE.
"They were married at their home in Los Angeles several weeks ago in a very intimate ceremony," Murphy's rep tells PEOPLE. "It was officiated by a rabbi and they were surrounded by their families."
After the wedding they then headed to Louisville for last weekend's Kentucky Derby.
"This was our first trip as a married couple. We came to the Kentucky Derby and had a wonderful time," they said in a statement to PEOPLE on Tuesday.
The couple visited jeweler Neil Lane about two weeks ago to pick out an engagement ring – and left the store with two rings, Lane says.
"They couldn't decide on one, so they got them both," Lane tells PEOPLE. "Simon told me: 'You know, you only live once.' He did it with a lot of love and sentiment. I've never had that happen to me before. It's so romantic."
One was a five-carat platinum ring with a yellow diamond surrounded by white stones, the other was a six-and-a-half-carat platinum ring with a cushion-cut diamond and diamonds embedded into the band.
They showed off the both rings – and a wedding band – at the Derby, where they were guests of T-Mobile, along with Jimmy Fallon, Laura Prepon and Regina King.
"They were all over each other – very, very affectionate," says a source who saw the couple Saturday morning at a party in Louisville.
"They were inseparable," adds another source who spent time with the newlyweds.
Monjack, 37, who started out directing commercials, contributed to the story that became the independent feature film Factory Girl and is set to direct The White Hotel, which he adapted from D.M. Thomas's 1981 novel about Sigmund Freud and an opera singer he treats. Murphy, 29, is slated to star in the project.
Before meeting Monjack, Murphy had been engaged twice before. She split with best-boy grip Joe Macaluso in August 2006 and ended her engagement to Jeff Kwatinetz, CEO of Hollywood talent agency The Firm, in 2004. She previously dated Ashton Kutcher, her costar in 2003's Just Married.
In addition to The White Hotel, Murphy has several films coming out this year, including Tinker Bell, The Ramen Girl and Sin City 2.
Monjack has directed one previous film, 2000's Two Days, Nine Lives.
