Has anyone ever taken the car train to Florida?

We are flying this time, but the more I think about it, it is such an ordeal!

We were then thinking about the auto train for the next time. Then, you don't have to rent a car or fuss about car seats etc...

You have to pick up the auto train in DC. We have taken Amtrak to Florida twice. It is a long trip. The first time was ok. They overbooked the train and had to add 2 more cars in DC. That delayed us 3 hours. I tried to sleep, but that was impossible. So many people on the train were rude. Talking all night long. Even when they were told by the crew to be quiet. There was a dining car that was open all night which was great. The kids on the train were really good. But it was hard for them to get comfy and most of them slept on the floor. The second trip was worse. We broke down for hours in the middle of the night in Georgia. No a/c, no water. It was horrible. The crew was nice but the train was horrible. Mind ya my first trip was in 1989 and my second in 1995. Things may have changed....

My DH did a few times when he was in high school and he hated it. He said it was painful

Overall I think Amtrack is a racket. It is so expensive and not really that niceChat Icon

I've never taken it, but I kinda think it's not worth it... unless you need to get a car down there and you are alone and don't want to drive all the way to FL alone (my dad's friend did this a few years ago when he moved from NY to FL).

You have to drive over 5 hours to VA to pick it up and then it's a 17-18 hour train ride and I think it drops you near Orlando. You could do that same distance driving (VA to Orlando) in probably 10 hours.

Thanks! I guess there really isn't a good way to travel! As a kid, we never vacationed anywhere where we didn't drive. So, this whole flying with kids thing is new for me! I am just praying for the best!!!! Chat Icon

I took it when we moved to Florida-unless you are moving, I don't see a point-it is long and uncomfortable and expensive!
