Soothie pacifiers and choking
Wondering if anyone has ever heard of a baby choking on a Soothie pacifier. These are the only ones DS ever took to, but today his daycare lady told me she found he had stuffed the whole thing in his mouth.
He has been turning it and chewing on it for a long time, but she said she was actually scared today when she saw he had put the whole thing in. He wasn't choking, but I suppose he could.
We have the "infant" size ones too (the ones he has been using are "newborn" which are just much softer and more bendable) so we are going to go with them for now so he shouldn't be able to fold it into his mouth.
But I was just so surprised - I never thought I had to worry about him choking on a pacifier!

Re: Soothie pacifiers and choking
Thats a rather large pacifier to put the whole thing in his mouth. He couldn't choke on it. Way too big to fit down his throat....Still scary though..

Wow- Mia has used these since birth and this has never happened. They are the biggest pacies out there too!

Re: Soothie pacifiers and choking
Shaylie used this paci and when I noticed that she was able to get it into her mouth sideways, I changed her to the next level of soothies. They're less flexible than the newborn ones. They come in pink & blue. When she grew out of that one, I got her another soothie paci that's bigger than her mouth and there's no way of getting the whole thing in her mouth.

Re: Soothie pacifiers and choking
I actually read somewhere that if they can turn it around and fit it in their mouths to immediately take it away. Someone has binkies that have the mouth part of the soothie but the hoider is larger more traditionally shaped...maybe Gerber-you can probably find it at BRU

Re: Soothie pacifiers and choking
My baby has been doing that for a while now. He chews on it all the time, I guess he finds it soothing on his gums. I'm sure he can't choke on it, he can only get it in sideways. They also have those 2 little air holes. Sometimes it does get stuck, but he can breathe.
We got the same level soothie but the one that looks like it has handles on the side. He can't get that one in his mouth.

Oh wow...DD has the older stage for some of them, she is 6months, she turns it all around all the time, never thought of that....hmmm we are weaning her off of the paci but I still don't think she can fit the whole thing into her mouth....have to look into this now, thanks!

Wow...I can see how that can make you nervous. DS has them and so far he hasn't stuck the whole thing in his mouth. He does love to chew on it though. It is too big for him to swallow. I would definitely move to the next size....

Re: Soothie pacifiers and choking
Soothie also makes a teething pacifier that is REALLY long and wide (we have this one too):http://www.learningcurve.com/product/detail/Y4449A3?locale=en_US

Re: Soothie pacifiers and choking
I have to add that Soothies are horrible for the mouth dentally speaking. I just saw a 2 year old patient the other day and her whole mouth formed to the shape of this pacifier. I used them for both of my children while they were newborns but switched to an orthodontic pacifier very quickly. Just my $.02

Re: Soothie pacifiers and choking
This is the one we got, DC holds it and chews on it. I would recommend it.

Re: Soothie pacifiers and choking
Thanks for all your input. The thought of him with it really freaked me out! Something that just never occurred to me.
I guess "choking" wasn't exactly the word since it would be unlikely he could get it stuck in his throat- more suffocating if he got it stuck in his mouth but couldn't get air in, though I guess since he mostly breathes through his nose, it probably wouldn't happen.
We do have the harder ones - that's what he is using now. And we have the big teething one as well but he never liked either of those as much. Oh well, maybe now is as good a time as any to try and wean him off.

That picture is so cute! Yup, DS loves to chew on it too- he actually loves to chew on the holder we have for it even more.

Re: Soothie pacifiers and choking
My DD uses the exact same one & has scared me a few times too! Around 4 months she was REALLY stuffing it in there (more chewing than sucking). I wanted to wean her from it at that time, but she just got over her colic and I just couldn't.... She's 6 months now and although she still chews on it alot- it's more the rim/ back of it. We tried the level up that's harder and she wanted nothing to do with it.
