I've heard from a lot of teachers that it seems a hybrid schedule is most likely. Which is difficult for many, including teachers with children who are expected to be at school every day.
Parents ... plan for remote schooling. Worst case, you don’t need it. But from what I’m hearing, schools are preparing for 3 scenarios. Full in person school, part time remote/part time in person or full remote. And this can happen at the drop of a dime (or a few cases of covid pops up in a school)
You don’t want to leave yourself screwed. Line up relatives or neighbors who can help. Start checking care.com for availability. Have a plan. Because My fear for you guys - it’ll be a shit show
What does part-time mean? What exactly should I tell my boss? I *might* only be able to come in 2 days a week, or I'm only available in the afternoons from September on, or I will just let you know which days I'll be in the week before? Our district hasn't told us what our part time option is. How in the hell are we supposed to "plan" for this?
And where exactly is the money coming for child care for multiple children? I was paying close to $2000 per month for PART TIME daycare until my kids went to school and we searched around so I know that was cheap compared to most centers. And centers are cheaper than hiring a person to come to your home. We went into debt for five years paying for this, with the expectation that once they were in school we could financially recover. Now what??? We can't afford for either DH or I to stop working, and we can't afford to have our children in daycare indefinitely. So how exactly do I, in a practical way, "plan" for this??
I'm not directing this specifically at you PhyllisnJoe, but people need to stop letting us parents know we need to plan for any scenario. That's the least helpful advice I've ever heard. It's useless. It's pointless.

The teachers with children are stressing as they are going to have to get childcare for whatever days their kids aren't in school as they are required to teach full time.
There is no good option unfortunately.

And allowing stragners into your home is a good option? How do you know what they are carrying? And then daycare centers- hot beds of germs. And I heard some people saying they want to hire a teacher and have a co-op- a bunch of parents chip in and the teacher teaches a bunch of kids at someone's house. How is that any better- a bunch of kids TOGETHER in someone's house. And where are all these for hire teachers coming from?

There’s no good option, but the point is to minimize exposure to prevent outbreaks.
Having small class sizes limits exposure. Even having a sitter come to your house limits exposure. Homeschool co-ops limit exposure.
I firmly believe placing thousands of individuals in a building with no ventilation is a recipe for disaster.
That being said, I am now going to be hounding the board of Ed about proper air flow and ventilation in our school buildings. Maybe this will be the push we need to finally have air conditioning

I was thinking about that air filtration system that Cuomo was requiring for malls to open. Why can't schools get that if they think it's helpful? Oh let me guess- not enough money right?.

I’m a parent and I’ve made arrangement in advance. I don’t think it’s useless or pointless advice at all. Regardless of what we want, it might happen. And even if they do go back FT, there is a chance a school can close for 2 weeks ++ with pretty much zero notice.
I spoke to my boss and worked out a PT remote work schedule until at least January 2021. DH worked out one day. I also have a retired teacher from my neighborhood lined up to stay with my kids the other day(s) if they’re home. I don’t expect her to do anything but keep them alive so she’s not asking for much $$.

I don't have to go back to work in person until the kids go back full time so I am home indefinitely - which is nice to have the option not to worry about childcare.

Cuomo says he wants schools to reopen in September, and that is currently the plan
I'm somewhat lucky that I am due with my second the end of September so I will be available for my older son who will be entering 1st grade. But I can't imagine dealing with a newborn and having to teach him. I know first world problems. Just thankful not to stress about child care. I am stressed about he will do this year in school academically.

Same. Minus the baby. LOL DH is home all the time and I can work from home if need be. I am hoping my office will be reopen by Sept but with the way they are going, that's even doubtful. So yes we are fortunate. I do not forget that. However, my concern, like yours is her education. We are not equipped to teach her. And her school did a god awful job of distance learning anyway. And even if they did an amazing job, she does not learn well at home. Short of the teacher coming to our house with the class, she won't learn the same as she does in school. It's a mess

Why is everyone hating everyone else.
This is why our society sucks. Because one person is able to figure it out someone else is a woe is me snarkapotamus.
Everyone is going to have to be more flexible, from the top down, from bosses to employees. Otherwise yes, society will crumble because people will have to find a way to choose childcare, education or employment.
It's not a pretty picture so people should stop being so ****** to one another.

God, grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can and the wisdom to know the difference.
No solution will be ideal, everyone will be inconvenienced, there will be months of uncertainty and it is hard. Be kind to yourself and others knowing there is no ideal solution.

A little empathy goes a long way.
Because when someone is talking about what a huge challenge the situation is for them, telling them how many different options they have personally lined up is unnecessary and dismissive.
Telling me how quickly and easily she lined up a plan is a slap in the face to plenty of us who do not have those options and are dreading September.
How hard is that to understand?
It's similar to someone saying they lost their job because of the shutdown and someone jumping in and saying how grateful they are that they are getting extra hazard pay. Which is why I said "how great for you". Because she replied directly to my comment with absolutely no compassion and nothing helpful to offer.

It's not a pretty picture so people should stop being so ****** to one another.
I don't think most of us can work from home and simultaneously educate our children. This is not a choosing work over childcare situation, this is the reality of of life for most families. I cannot quit my job or go part time or any of those things. I just can't and I would assume most others cannot, either.
The idea that families with 2 working parents are being put in this position is deplorable and the attitudes of parents (mostly moms, as usual) who jump up and say they stay home or will quit or will go part time like that is a tangible solution are even worse. Perhaps its a solution for them, but it isn't a solution for the rest of us, no matter how many times you tell us it is.

Cuomo says he wants schools to reopen in September, and that is currently the plan
Child care is going to be hard for a lot of people. There's no question of that. But we can't just give up and throw 25 people in a room bc it's hard. Parents, schools, and employers need to all look for solutions so no one is left without options. The alternative is we fully open schools and a month later they're shut down again and you have an even more difficult childcare problem to solve.

Without a solution for working parents, it's not hard, it's impossible.

I agree, but are people expecting the school districts to solve the problem? How can they, they have guidelines they have to follow, the buildings aren’t big enough to to have all kids. There is no magic wand. Kids educations are going to suffer, parents are going to be stressed beyond belief. But there are no options that let the schools open full time and follow the guidelines

Well according to Betsy Devos they are just "guidelines" so guess we don't have to follow them

Re: Cuomo says he wants schools to reopen in September, and that is currently the plan
This is so hard for several reasons but many of them boil down to social problems that grew out of years of horrible policies.
Year of defunding schools (NOW everyone's worried about the HVAC. Yeah, ok.)
Subpar healthcare access that only contributes to the comorbidities that surely cause longer "recovery" times
Low wages that leave people without a cushion in the event of job loss or the need for unpaid family leave, not that even the latter is usually available.
Inflexible employers because of our "fukk you if you can't figure it out" culture
Lack of subsidized day care and childcare.
So much of this - not all of it by any means - but so much of it was preventable or mitigable.

But I'm thinking if schools do not reooen fully employers who have the capability to allow employees to work from home or they will risk losing good employees. Its not like this issue is a limited to one area. Its a nationwide problem. San Diego and LA just announced they won't be opening next month. So you are going to tell me that employers in those areas aren't going to have to bend some? I'm not saying it's going to be easy,.

I see two issues with this reasoning:
1. The unemployment rate is so high that some employers may take the chance that someone else will happily fill empty positions (especially in lower level jobs).
2. Even if they allow parents to work from home, we’re not actually “working”. We’re teaching and feeding our children, navigating google classrooms and YouTube videos for our kids and double checking worksheets and math problems. Which isn’t exactly fair to employers either. Or else parents are working late into the night every night. And how long is that physically, mental and emotionally sustainable?
And all of this doesn’t even take into account the fact that many, many jobs simply cannot be done remotely.

Back to the topic of schools... just saw this....
IMAGE
Woah. Ok I know you said you weren’t directing at me but then to say “people need to stop letting us parents know, least helpful advice, etc.
Listen. I don’t have kids. This affects me 0%. I was talking to a teacher friend who went into as much detail as she could and we were talking about how parents are supposed to do this?! And her words were plan for all 3 scenarios so you aren’t shit outta luck and possibly get in trouble at work. I’m sorry that advice was useless and pointless. I just wanted to pass along info from my friend
I also know that I have offered my time (what I have available) to my friends and family if these scenarios pop off in an instant and they need the help. Ya know.. preparing.
All the best

Cuomo says he wants schools to reopen in September, and that is currently the plan
I'm obviously freaking out because I'm a teacher. If my DD is only part time in school, i still have be in my school full time seeing my "a" and "b" groups. I'm there 5x/week, no option to stay home. And while I can be really angry at people here who have nice options laid out for childcare, I'm happy for them and glad some have figured out something. This sucks all around, and I think we should be happy to have a job. I don't have people to watch DD, my in laws live in Fl and one of my parents is not retirement age yet/works in healthcare full time. But instead of writing "good for you" for all those who have stuff figured out, I'm just gonna keep trying to iron out plans for all situations. We are parents, we signed up to make sure our kids are always taken care of. It's our responsibility to figure it out and stop complaining lol

California announced fully online in the fall. Honestly, I'm expecting the same here.
