Moving off LI, commuting distance to NYC?

Where would you go? What are the advantages - low taxes, larger property, etc? I love LI and family is here, but I would love to live somewhere I could retire earlier, and not have so much traffic.

I think no matter where you go thats in commuting distance to NYC you are going to still pay a lot and not get a huge amount of property. Unless you want to commute for hours and hours each day - you are going to deal with a lot of people and traffic.

My DH commutes to Astoria each day. We are in Suffolk and considering moving to Orange County, specifically Warwick and Cornwall. Both have great school districts. The problem is that the costs of the houses are pretty much averaging LI. We are moving for a number of reasons, not just the cost of living on LI.

My SILs mom lives in Scranton PA and commutes to NYC 3x weekly to teach at a college I think she said it’s a little over an hour

Like other posters have said, there's no place within commuting distance to NYC that has low taxes and no traffic. However, I must say that's northern Westchester does not seem so bad (relatively).

I work in the Bronx and live 20 miles away in mid Nassau. My sister lives about 45 miles from the Bronx in northern Westchester. One day, out of curiosity, I put her address into Google Maps to see what the drive time would be. It was one hour and 9 minutes. For me to go 20 miles to Long Island, it was one hour and 8 minutes!

With Westchester, once you get past White Plains, traffic usually isn't so bad. On LI, it's bad everywhere!

Northern Westchester isn't bad, but you have to go through southern Westchester and the Bronx to get to the city and those are terrible.

If you want lower taxes and more property, Westchester is not the place. My bff just bought a house in very northern Westchester and her taxes are $25k for an acre. It will take her 2 hours each way to commute into the city.

I don't know what the traffic is like in eastern Suffolk, but that would be far more affordable than any desirable areas of Westchester.

We are in Rockland County. I like that it doesn’t take us as long to get places out of state as it did from Long Island but I feel it’s in line price wise and tax wise with Long Island.

I will not be retiring early. I think to retire early you need to leave the NY area and head south or towards the Midwest where cost of living is lower.

My ILs lived in southern Dutchess. Taxes were similar as were the cost of a nice home. The difference is that you can get a lot more for your money in terms of house and land.

Everything is relative. We looked in Scarsdale, Rye, and Chappaqua. We chose to stay in LI because we want to be near my parents, and even with living on the north shore, LI taxes and such seem like a bargain in comparison!

I would have LOVED to move to a suburb of Boston and that’s something we considered before having kids, but now that we’re parents and my family is so helpful, staying here is the only sensible option for us. The help is invaluable.

My dh commutes to the city from new rochelle Westchester. It’s an 8 minute walk to the metro north and 28-32 min to grand central. Taxes are high here but you also get a lot for your money property wise. Ours are 18k but I have almost half an acre.

If family is a huge factor, then stay near them. You’ll never be happy if you’re away from them

I could definitely get more for my money in Rockland county where I grew up, like larger property. But commute into the city would be annoying because there is not direct train. And taxes are still high. Maybe traffic isn't as bad. Except if you need to go over the Tappan Zee.

Do you commute by car or train and how many days a week? That would be the largest factor to consider.

I live on SI, which is WITHIN NYC (technically, it's really like another planet) and it takes me 1 hr 30 minutes to get to NYC for work on the best day...and I don't want to talk about what it is like on the worst

However, this odd place has grown on me, lol. I do live within the city limits, so we benefit from a lot of things (schools, libraries and parks off the top of my head)

Most people leave and go to Jersey. I am not ready to though because I feel NY(C) schools are much better (my SO's son goes to school in NJ and its not good).

I don't really have an answer for you, I think anywhere you have to commute you just have to deal with it.

PA has lower taxes and cheaper houses but the commute may be a lot...
