Thanks for posting, I will definitely watch this once DD goes to bed! While I don't let DD "watch" tv intentionally, we do tend to have the tv on a LOT for background noise. I wonder if they address that and if it's as harmful as putting on Barney (or whatever kids watch these days)?

Yes they do address it, and they explain the research that shows which type is harmful and why.

I'm watching it right now...

basically under 2, any televised programs don't do much for them and have shown delayed language skills, no research yet on screens yet (like ipads, iphones, etc) 2+yrs should be in moderation....

media diet like food and exercise, in moderation, talk to them a lot is a lot more sufficient than tv

I'm like 20 mins in, 10mins left

Re: AAP releases a policy statemtent about babies and media use

good summary here:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/on-parenting/post/aap-reaffirms-no-screen-time-for-young-children-even-though-few-parents-listen/2011/10/18/gIQAZvpkuL_blog.html

here is what I got out of it

no benefit:
children under 2 do not learn from tv, studies prove it
(she says some might start to learn at around 18m, but most not till 2)

some harm:
language - short term expressive language delays
(they suspect this is something that will affect the child when they are adults)
sleep - sleep is affected and impacts learning and behavior
time well spent - playing independently is time better spent

(I personally know a researcher that is studying listening skill in toddlers and time tv spent, they tell me they hope to publish next year, and they have found toddlers who "listen" watch less tv than their counterparts, they think this impacts how children learn in school)

adult watching tv with a child over 2, is actually found to have some benefit in learning.

No research with apps and games, that are interactive, the research refers to "linear content"

"who would put a tv in toddler bedroom" 1/3 of all toddlers under 3 do according to their studies ... Chat Icon

no causality proven with ADD, Autism, etc, and she says its not clear what causes what, but language and sleep problems proven.

"how much tv under 2 is harmless?" ... she says policy says none, but "thoughtfully consider media use and how you wish to introduce it in your child's life"

"how much for over 2" combined 2 hours a day of screen time max (all computer, tv, and the like)

strong correlation to problems with behavioral and health effects for older children who watch over 2 hours a day.

"let your child play independently (without tv) and don't feel guilty about it" (I love this point!)
