I wanted to share this week's article wherever if would be seen. Beach safety is very important (especially the final portion on riptides). Chat Icon

Surf, Sand, and Safety: Beach Ready Safety Tips
by Rachel Derry

One of the best features of living on an Island is that there are plenty of beautiful beaches for spend family sun and fun day! Before you pack up your goodies and go, there are a few safety precautions that you should always keep in mind.

Before you head out for the day you’ll want to make sure to check that weather conditions for your area and the beach. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how different the weather can be around the water (especially if you live inland). Be sure that it’s still going to be an ideal weather day and that the wind and water aren't going to be too rough for you and the crew.

Be sure to stick close to your lifeguard when setting up your gear. Not only will you want to stick close when swimming in the water, you'll also want to check with him or her on the current rip tides and any extra precautions that they may suggest you take.

Make sure to bring along shade for you and your little ones to catch a break from the sun. Although you're going to the beach to enjoy a day in the beautiful weather, after a while you'll all find that your need a break. There are great family canopy, tent and umbrella options that will ensure everyone has a place to hide out for a breather.

Speaking of the sun, of course you'll remember the sunscreen for the little ones, but don't think mom and dad are exempt from the sun’s harmful rays. You'll be reapplying sunscreen on your children every hour or so of sweaty water fun; you should also be doing so with yourselves.

Be sure to bring plenty of water and to keep hydrated. It’s easy to forget that you're still dehydrating even when you're swimming around in the big blue ocean. Be sure to take hydration breaks. This is especially true for your little ones running around; if they're predominantly staying out of the water and running under the sun, they're going to dehydrate quickly as their bodies try to keep them cool.

Be careful with your water toys. If you're bringing floats to the beach, remember to keep them anchored or tied to shore. Water currents are quick to carry them out far beyond reach (even when you're sunbathing on them). It’s actually suggested that the floats be saved for the swimming pool and that your boogie boards accompany you to the beach, instead.

Chat Icon Lastly, remember that every beach has riptides and that you should all be aware of what to do should you be caught in one. Rule number one is to never fight the riptide. Even the strongest, trained swimmer can tire themselves out fighting against a winning current. Instead, swim with the riptide, parallel to the beach. You will eventually swim out of the tide and be able to get back to shore. You may have a long way to walk back, but you at least you will be safe.Chat Icon

Luring Attempts in Nassau - Keep A Watchful Eye
Apr 30 2013 10:06AM

This month alone, Nassau Police report that there have been at least 10 incidences of attempted luring in the Merrick and Bellmore communities; at least 4 of these attempts have involved middle school students. Nassau Police are stepping up their patrolling in the area, and area keeping their eyes on local schools and bus stops.

Most all of the incidents have involved a stranger following or approaching the children; one involved a white van following a sixth grader; one involved a green 4-door sedan approaching an eighth grader. The perpetrator, or perpetrators, are believe to be Hispanic male, mid-twenties to late thirties with black hair and short facial hair.

The individual is considered a person of interest and not wanted for a crime, at this point. Attached is the current suspect sketch for an individual involved.

Parents are encouraged to speak with their children about strangers and walking in groups.
