The drink...and my new bird! Friday night after work, DH and I went to this great little bird store up the street from us. We're really lucky to have one so close. I saw this sweet little bird in the cage and kept going back to her. So I decided she would be Cream's new little friend. And luckily she has a sort of latte color to her, so her name matches as well.As you can see from the picture, they are not entirely comfortable with each other yet. They have not started snuggling on the same perch at night. But I am confident that after a few days they will be like sisters. Already the apartment is filled with birdie calls and I know that Cream is much happier now. I am too, to be honest. I still miss Sugar and Coffee will never replace her. But she's a great bird so far and I've already grown to love her.

Sugar was my zebra finch. I had two, Cream and Sugar. Such good little birds. Always chirping and happy. They love hearing the TV, especially Star Trek, because of all the high pitched beeping and booping. Sugar was especially vocal they would call back and forth. I loved that sound when I was home on the weekends.I found her at the bottom of the cage this evening when I came home from work. My poor baby. Cream just looked alone and confused. I'm going out tomorrow after work to get her a little friend. I can't stand to see her alone. I've already decided that I have to get a vocal bird (since Cream is quiet and Sugar used to bring her out of her shell), and she will be named Coffee. DH was so sweet. He said we'll go anywhere until we find the right bird. He understands that even though Sugar was just a bird, she was a part of the family and I loved her so very much. So rest in peace Sugar, my sweet little bird. I will always remember the sound of your call, and you will always be in my heart.

I came home yesterday in a foul mood. Just a crappy day at work. I'm a grad student in Neuroscience and I'm SO ready to be done with school. My experiments didn't go well and just the fact that I had to be at work while DH had a day off did not help my motivation. But on Sunday I bought 2 pumpkins, and so last night I baked to my hearts content. I made 2 pumpkin pies (all from scratch) and 1 loaf of pumpkin bread. It's funny, but baking reminds me of science... only just the good parts of science that I like. You have to be creative, and it involves a lot of tactile senses. Things mix together in certain ways to make a final product. But with baking, there is very little uncertainty. If my oven is the right temp and I follow the directions, I am pretty confident that I can reproduce perfect cookies every time. With science (especially since I work with animals), there is an element of uncertainty that just puts me ill at ease. So much time is spent designing these experiments. I always worry if my experiments will work, or even if they will give me useful data. So I guess baking gives me the best of both worlds. And with baking, I always get compliments and praise, which is pretty rare in science (or at least in my lab)
Well, here it goes...I've never done a blog before, but it sounds fun. I know people tend to have themes, but I think I'll just write about whatever strikes me. But I do like crafty things, so my first post is going to be about the cake that I am incredibly proud of.I made it for my friend's birthday, and since it is in October, I did Halloween sprinkles on top. I had bought a Betty Crocker Bake and Fill pan a while back, and tried two times prior to make a pudding cake. The first time I got impatient, and tried to take it out of the pan before it fully cooled. It ripped the top of the cake off. The second time my pudding was too liquid, and didn't support the center of the cake. Third time is a charm: I used 2 cups of heavy cream with the pudding mix to make a chocolate mousse. It worked perfectly! The cake cut into perfect slices with chocolate mousse in the middle. My friends were very impressed. I was so happy with it, and glad that I was able to make a nice birthday cake for my friend.
