I wonder if the dept. store makeup is the same as the "higher end" makeup amd we just pay more for the name?
I saw on the new once this is true (?)

I think for certain things they are and other things they are better.
There was a good article in the August issue of Real Simple magazine about what you should spend $ on and what you don't need to.
I remeber that they said you should spend $ on eye shadow and blush b/c the pigment is better in Dept store brands. But Mascara is pretty much all the same.
I can't remember the rest.

I agree with mascara - I've tried al price ranges and always come back to Maybelline (though I hate the "pink & green" one).

I have a friend who used to work for Clinique, and she said their make-up was the same as Loreal. I guess it's the same company...

I have also heard that about Lancome, that it's the same as Loreal. And aren't Clinique and Lancome (and I'd now assume Loreal) owned by Estee Lauder? It makes sense- why reformulate so many times?
I also really like Bourjois, which is sold in drugstores in France, but Sephora/Ulta in the US. And I read that it's made in the Chanel factory in France, and that it's the same stuff in cheaper packaging. Don't know if it's true.
I'm a cosmetics conspiracy nut.

I don't work with make-up, I work with skin treatment products. But it is pretty much the same idea.
For some products, like basic moisturizers or hand creams, it is not worth it for the higher end stuff. Moisturizers are mosturizers! But for anti-aging products (this is what I am most familiar with) there is usually a difference between high-end and drug store type products. What I have learned from formulating these products is that the "cheaper" products cost little to make, therefore the active ingredients (the more expensive of the raw materials) and in the product at very low percentages. This is just to get the name of the ingredient on the label and then the marketing people go crazy making claims. Higher end lines will go for a use level that shows results, which means higher cost for raw materials and then a higher cost for the finished product. But then again some higher end companies also exaggerate their claims. I NEVER believe the marketing and advertising that I see.. learn to read ingredient labels. This is a good website to look up ingredients:
http://www.cosmeticscop.com/learn/dictionary.asp?TYPE=MAIN The label is listed in order from highest percentage to lowest percentage until you reach 1%, then it can be in any order. So if you see the active ingredient near the end that is no good. If anyone needs help decoding any labels let me know, I will be glad to help!
There are 2 companies that I do work for that always use the latest and greatest actives at their correct use levels and I think they are definitely worth the $. There is another company that will just use a drop of each active, so you shouldn't expect to see any results from this brand, and this brand is cheaper than the other 2 I mentioned.
Loreal is Loreal, Lancome, Kiehls, Maybelline, Garnier, Redken, Matrix, The body Shop + many more...
Estee Lauder is Estee Lauder, Origins, Clinique, Prescriptives, La Mer, Bobbi Brown, Mac, Jo Malone, Bubble & Bumble & many more...
But that doesn't mean all their lines have comparable products. Formula bases may be similar, but the active ingredients and/or levels most definitely are not.

julz, so what if you have an anti-aging lotion w/spf and all the active ingredients(4 of them starting with 4% down to 1%) listed are just sunscreens? Sounds like it's nothing more than a sunscreen to me

at my former job, we were allowed to go shop at the Estee Lauder company store and get big discounts.
here are all the brands they sold: Estee Lauder, Stilla, MAC, Clinique, Origins, Bobby Brown, and a few others I cannot remember.
I used to know someone who's BFF worked for Revlon. She told me that it's all the same. I don't know if I agree though. I'm sure we've all spent a fortune over the years on makeup and for whatever reason, we buy what we like best for US.

Oh... I didn't mention the "Active Ingredient" box for the drug products... sunscreens are drugs and must be listed on the label in a seperate box labelled Active Ingredients. If it is an anti-aging product with SPF, does it say anything else on the container about antioxidants, vitamins, botanicals, etc... Those are the active ingredients you should look for on the ingredient listing (not in the drug box)
I know it is confusing!
what is the name of product? I will look it up & let you know.

ok, I sort of get it.
One product is oil of olay definity and the other is lancome aqua fusion, both w/spf 15.
What about aveda tourmaline hydrating creme(I use this more in the winter) but I just read up on the tourmaline from that link you provided and it means absolutely nothing in a cosmetic- interesting.
