Re: Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna

Of all these cities, I have been to Munich and Vienna - loved Vienna. I have heard Budapest and prague are beautiful too. I wasn't as impressed with Munich, but that was a long time ago.

In Vienna be sure to visit St. Stepehn's and try to to a riverboat tour. Also visit the opera house.

Re: Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna

I personally love munich! if you are strict on a tour - go to the hofbrauhaus at night for some real bavarian fun.

Is the tour taking you to Neuschwanstein (crazy king ludwig's castle)? that's a 45 minute ride - but one of munich's great attractions.

find out when the glockenspiel goes off - that always attracts a crowd.

marienplatz is great for shopping and food.

there is a japanese pagada in the English garden by the river which is a beer hall outside - lots of fun on a nice day.

dachau is a short train ride - but that takes a bit of time

If you can get over to the university of Munich you can see the memorial to Hans and Sophie Schol who ran an anti-hitler group. they have their flyers permanantly pictured on the stone below the window they threw them out of when they were being chased byt he SS and the gunshot holes on the brick wall where they were executed

------------------------------------------------------
for prague:

the charles bridge is a great place to find little trinkets and such. on the other side is the castle - which is interesting - but nothing like neuschwanstein in munich.

If you want to buy garnet or faberge or even a hummel - this is the place to do it - they are all over the place

prague also has a glockenspiel

there is an english section in prague and it's interesting to go to the bookstores and meet the ex-pats there.

the operahouse area is beautiful as well

I have been to all these cities and I loved everyone of them. I love Vienna it is so beautiful and the pastries are delish! The Beer Gardens are great in Munich. Each of these cities are pretty small so you can do a lot of the sightseeing on your own. Vienna has a great trolley system. You could do your own tour on the trolley for a couple of bucks. Rick Steve has a great Germany and Austria book that will help you with Vienna and Munich. While in Munich we took the train to Dachau concentration camp, beautiful ride and the concentration camp was very interesting and somber.

ETA - Definitely go to Neuschwanstein . The views are amazing. There is a trail you can walk to an amazing (somewhat scary bridge) over waterfalls with an amazing view of the castle. Here is a pic of DH and I on the bridge

Re: Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna

i have been to all these cities, munich many times.

for munich i think the Hofbrauhaus is a must see. also Dachau is very interesting and worth the train ride and bus ride. Marienplatz is nice. dont go during Oktoberfest, too touristy.

Vienna- was ok. St. Stephans was nice. we didnt see much when we were there, we had been living in Europe for almost a year at that point and we were sick of churches and every european city looking the same. i went to Freuds house.

Budapest was great! DH (bf at the time) and i are both history buffs and very interested in communism and budapest didnt disappoint. we went to the communist statue park and the terror museum. the baths were nice as well, take time to visit them! we also went to a club one nite to see one of my favourite djs on the top of the hill. best club nite of my life. take care around the train station, though. a walk along the danube is also nice, as is all the touristy stuff in that area.

Prague- charles bridge is just great. also if you get the time take the hour trip to Terezin, just make sure that you can get back. my friend and i literally got stuck and it was a pretty scary few hours. no one spoke english, but thank god we found someone that spoke german and he called a taxi, or else we would have wound up sleeping on the street as it is a desolate abondoned town. Terezin is an old Jewish ghetto/concentration camp which is now a memorial basically. few people live there anymore. again it is what you are interested in- i am interested in history and non touristy things. prague has plenty to offer.
