ok-- they said it was in a Porteguese magazine-- and something very much so could have been lost in translation-- I am sure she may sorta think those things-- but maybe did not actually articulate it in that way. Just giving her the benefit of the doubt-- it's not like she said those things on the BBC

Maybe shes one of those people who thinks an accent automatically equates a higher intelligence and a more interesting personality... of course its not true just like all Americans arent idiots (although Ive always swooned over the English accent myself in particular) but maybe in her mind it is. I will say that (and i'm sure i'll get shot for this) in England... what you do for a living doesn't matter and it's not often the topic of discussion. In the U.S., it's one of the first questions that someone asks you when they meet you for the first time.
Now i'm not defending the first part of what she said at all... but the second quote was somewhat accurate.

I've lived in England for nearly three years now and I can say firsthand that it is definitely NOT true that jobs/careers are not a typical topic of conversation. Perhaps Gwynnie and I run in different circles...but my experience is people are often preoccupied with careers, money, real estate, etc, wherever you go...
I will say commericialism is not as prevalent here as it is in the US - "superstores" like Walmart, Costco, BJs, etc are few and far between (and sorely missed if you ask me!  sometimes it's extremely frustrating to not be able to go into one store and find everything you may need). But as for the average intelligence of people - I don't think it's fair to pass such a general judgement on any society - but I can tell you there are plenty of Brits who are dumb as rocks!
And RE: the accent, it doesn't really have anything to do with it...after a while of living with it, you don't even notice it anymore.

Where is your aunt based? I find that London and New York are more similar to one another than London is to other parts of England and NY is to other parts of America. Also, I think the trend towards commericalism is more recent here than it is in the States - like until very recently stores were closed every Sunday

She lives in Dacre Banks... about 20-30 minutes from Harrogate. And yes you're right... it's quite different from London.

Region can definitely dictate what is considered normal conversation, just like in the US.
I will say that no matter where we went, the general population is more in tune with current world events, and many different levels of politics, not just what directly affects them. That is indeed something that I find is a huge difference in our general cultures.

Well I live in the North of England (not all that far from Harrogate) and I would agree and disagree with some of what she is saying. I, like Gwenyth love living in the UK and I adore the lifestyle, I much prefer it to the lifestyle that I had in the states. I would say that no matter where you live in the UK that the favorite topics of conversation are probably something like this:
Real Estate
Work/Jobs/Careers
Drinking
ASBOS/Hoodies
Real Estate
I have been in the UK since 1993 and things have changed dramatically in the last 10 years. There are intellectuals, there is less commercialism, yes, some British are more intellectual than some Americans (I mean, I read the Guardian...so therefore I am one of them) And yes, British people are very civilised, in my opinion, much more civilised than Americans as a whole....they wait in lines for hours and they LOVE It, on the roads, if you put your blinker on, they will let you in! I love British People!
Anyway, if you think her quotes are true...I have one thing to say. Jeremy Kyle.

I find it quite humorous that a "quality" newschannel like MSNBC is interviewing someone from a tabloid on Gweneth's comments...it's like Jim Lehrer interviewing an editor from the National Enquirer about a news item
As for what Gweneth said, I think some of it got lost in translation although do agree with Gweneth's alleged comment about people in the UK not making a big deal about other's jobs, etc like Americans do. But I think whatever she sadi in the interview as re-translated back into English and therefore sounds worse than what she probably had originally said.
