My best friend & I backpacked all over Ireland for 5 weeks when we were 21. She had family all over the country so we were lucky enough to have someone stay with for free most of the time. We stayed at a hostel once (hated it) and treated ourselves to hotel rooms twice (one night b/c we were attending a wedding at the hotel).

We had the best time. But were lucky to have family & friends to stay with.

I have done 2 backpacking trips, when I was 12 my family backpacked around Europe for 7 weeks, it was a very fly by the seat of your pants trip and it was really great. We went to Greece, Italy, France & England. It was 1984 and we had a total ball. And when I was an exchange student in Manchester in 1993 I spent a month backpacking around before school started. I can't remember exactly where we went but I think we went to France, Belgium, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Monaco, Holland, and some other places...can't remember everything!

I loved it! We stayed in youth hostels and just had a fantastic time! I would recommend backpacking to anyone who is flexible. I think if you are really regimented and can't deal with not having a place to sleep...well, its not for you! But I loved it

I did it when I graduated college with 2 friends. We had a great time. we stayed in hostels - but always made sure we had a private room. Between the 3 of us we had a few places to stay.

I wouldn't do it again - but really was glad to have done it then. I was exhausted at the end of the trip.


We also went before the Euro, so we had much better deals.

i did a 6 week backpacking trip when i finished my first BA with a close friend. we started in england and did a circle around central europe. after london we went to paris, barcelona, cannes, nice, venice, rome, milan, geneva, bern, munich, berlin, amsterdam, brussels and back to london to get the flight home. it was great fun and we met lots of people.

i lived in germany for a year, so i did a few backpacking trips in that time. some were short trips and i did a 2 week trip around eastern europe (well what was formally known as eastern europe). that trip including Vienna, budapest, krakow, and warsaw.

i also backpacked and camped around finland and estonia for a week. our plan was to go to russia, but visas were a PITA for some in our group.

all great trips and during the eastern europe trip DH and i realised we were serious about each other. i guess being stuck in old communist buildings do that to you....

I backpacked through Europe with my best friend from college. We started in France and went to Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Holland, Belgium, and Luxembourg. The memories are priceless! We were 19 years old and we went while we were studying in France.
