I usually use them too. I seem to alwaysd be using different types, puree, crushed, but always 1 can of paste.

Re: To those who make their own sauce....
I sautee garlic and onion in olive oil. Sometimes i add red pepper flakes. I let those become translucent. If I am using meat I brown it first before the onion and garlic and use the same pan for flavor. Then i add my tomatos and paste and let simmer for about 2 hrs.

Pretty much the same except I will add fresh basil, salt, pepper, and sometimes a teeny tiny bit of sugar.

Re: To those who make their own sauce....
I use San Marzanno tomatoes. I heat extra virgin olive oil in a pot with crushed garlic, minced onion and red pepper flakes. Add the tomatoes and a few fresh sprigs of basil and that's it. Quick, easy marinara sauce.

Re: To those who make their own sauce....
ugh...down in the South it's so hard to find good stuff.
I try to use Tutarosso crushed and then Contadina tomato sacuce and paste and I tend to buy the ones that have the italian seasonings or roasted garlic in them to add flavor.
RECIPE (MIL shared): 2 large cans crushed 2 small cans sauce 2 small cans paste sauteed garlic (touch of olive oil) sausage, browned (I use mild or sweet, 4 or 6 to a batch) sprinkle enough basil and oregano to cover top of pot and stir in. dash of sugar to cut the acidity.
That's it. She does hers on the stove for a few hours (with meatballs too). I put mine in the slow cooker on low for a few hours.

Tuttarosa or red pack.
ETA I use 1 can crushed, 1 can tomato sauce, 2 cans whole peeled, 1 can paste.
