I'm so sorry. You did your best to keep your Sandy comfortable as long as you could. She will be better that she is now out of pain

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

We're doing okay. Just getting used to the apartment seeming empty.

I know I don't contribute much, because I can't really post at work, but I do lurk when I can...

Thank you for sharing all these kind words and good thoughts with a total stranger.

Tonight is a hard night. I was feeling a little better today and came home to a beautiful card from Sandy's surgeon, with a hand written note about how much she knew we loved her and how she lived a nice life with us, and how we did the right thing by letting her go. While it was wonderful to see that someone who didn't know us so well saw how much we loved her and how hard we worked to do the best for her this last year, it still made me sad...having a bit of a hard time tonight.

And the apartment seems so empty, and my floors are too clean (she shed A LOT), and when I'm watching TV I seem to be looking out of the corner of my eye waiting for her to come by...it's all just really hard.

My family has totally blown me off on all this -- my mother keeps yelling at me to not be upset and to get over it because she had a good life...no matter how good it was, I can't believe it's really over, and it's like she doesn't hear me when I try to talk, so I just give up.

Thankfully my husband is beyond perfect... he is so kind and so understanding and had taken far better care of me than I would ever take of myself...

Again, thank you, all of you for your kindness. I consider myself pretty strong willed and minded, and as I told my husband the other night, kind of bullet-proof, but not now...your words have done a lot to ease my mind and help alleviate some of my pain. It's nice to know there are other people out there who love their pets as much as I loved mine -- she was as close to a child as I've ever had -- and your compassion means a lot to me.

Just saw this now, but definitely wanted to post a response. I just cried myself a river, because this brought back all of those feelings from when I had to do this over a year ago. My cat, Smudge, was 19 years old as well, and I had gotten her when I was 7. We grew up together. When she started to get sick, I lost it. But, like you, I stayed with her in the room as they put her to sleep, and I was happy to see that it wasn't painful for her.

I just wanted to say that you're not alone, and that my thoughts and prayers are with you. I know how hard this is...it's been a year and a half for me and I still cry sometimes. But I'm glad you were able to find comfort in the fact that what you did for her was the best thing you could have done.
