RSV Shot

I've noticed a lot of twins have colds now...I have taken Jackie 2x to the doctor and today they finally told me she could have RSV. I didn't know this and wanted to tell everyone that there is a shot to prevent it (given monthly) if your baby was a preemie, which I know there are a few on here. We are going to get DDs the shots. So check with your pediatrician if you haven't already done so.

The only way to diagnose it as RSV is to go to the ER and get a test, and basically there is nothing they can do if it is diagnosed. So for us, we're not going to get the test but hopefully she gets better and its NOT RSV! I really can't imagine her being hospitalized.

I hope everyone's DC are feeling better! Chat Icon

Re: RSV Shot

what are symptoms of RSV??
Also if my babies were NOT prremies would they still be at risk? Or is just for babies who were preemies?

Symptoms of RSV are similar to that of a cold so it's hard to tell. All babies are at risk for RSV but preemies and babies with other medical conditions are at higher risk and symptoms would be more severe. The shots are about $1200/month for each one and are covered by insurance if your DC qualify!

THe shot itself if purely preventative. I think to clearly determine whether or not it is RSV you have to have a blood test at the hospital. The symptoms would be more severe if your little guys had RSV ... mine have colds right now but they are still themselves. If your kids are sick and out of sorts and seem to get progressively worse, I would speak to the ped.

Yes and a fever, and if they're not eating I think would be other indicators.

Chat Icon I hope I didn't scare you. Call your pediatrician and she what they have to say. Again, even if they are diagnosed with it, there's nothing they can do about it...so you treat it as you have been treating a cold. My only fear is if they're not eating or if it goes to the lungs they could be hospitalized - that's with RSV or not. Chat Icon

I think I was wrong about the blood test - DH thinks that it's a nasal swab... if you're that concerned, speak to your PED and see if they recommend getting tested. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: RSV Shot

We got my boys the shot since they were premies, one has a heart issue and the other was IUGR and had surgery a month after birth and we had them with a sitter. Our insurance paid 90% of it, and it was a relief to get it, even though it was montly for 5 months.
