NYC Teachers
Ok, I know I have posted that I am not interested in working in the city. I guess mainly because I am a LI girl and the city scares me just a little bit.
But I really want to get some more experience so I want to at least consider it.
If you work in the city, can you let me know what areas are decent/safe to work in. I really know nothing about Queens/Brooklyn and could use some knowledge!

i live in district 25, and its great, keep in mind district 25 and 26 are just as hard to get jobs as LI! most of region 3 is ok........im not familiar with BK

FH is a teacher in 26 - he started out in Jamaica  but ended up getting moved into Bayside, which is such a great area, and only about 5 minutes from Nassau anyway!

i live in district 26 and the area and schools are great, probably some of the best in the city. I work in district 29 in Hollis and the area is ok, i feel safe there, but the schools are not as good.

This offends me. You could have simply asked what are some good areas to teach...decent/safe???
Some of the best public schools are in:
Bayside
Maspeth
Middle Village
Whitestone
some parts of Flushing
Basically, district 26 is the best in Queens.

Just keep in mind as someone else said...the areas that people regard as decent/safe are hard to get into...Good Luck

Believe it or not, there are some really great, well-run schools in parts of the city that aren't considered "decent" or "safe". You may need to be a little more flexible as some of the aforementioned parts of Queens are *almost* as competitive as LI.

Well it wasn't meant to offend you or anyone else. Everyone always seems to have something to say when anything regarding neighborhoods get brought up. I'm looking for an area where I won't be scared for my life that I will be mugged, killed or anything else. Does that make you happy?

I grew up in district 26. The schools and area are good. Definately hard to find a job there!

I am a LI girl and taught on LI for two years but was excessed....I now work in NYC in Manhattan. I work in Grammercy park which is a beautiful area at one of the worst schools in NYC. I love every minute of it....much more then the school on LI. You have too keep an open mind when looking for a job in NYC and you might be suprised at what you find.....

Yea I am pretty open to where I go. I would really rather stay somewhere I can drive comfortably to or take a train that stops pretty close to where I am going.
I know there are some really bad areas out there, however I don;'t know where those areas actually are. I just dont want to feel like I should have protection with me which isn't too much to ask for.

The city as a whole is much safer than it used to be- I work in the South Bronx and have been here for 10 years, and I have never felt unsafe, have never had any kind of problem. You just have to use caution, but IMO, you have to do that everywhere. My class and I walk to the subway to go on field trips, several times a year, and I've never worried.
If you're that anxious, it will be apparent to others, especially the students, and that will make things much harder for you.

that is true. its just almost a whole different world going from long island to anything city. at least that's how i feel and change takes time to get use to.
I don't even go to the city in general. I went to school for a year at St John's and left because I hated taking the train home.

I don't think she's being offensive. I am a city teacher and there are some schools I wouldn't want to work in. I've heard some horror stories (about the neighborhoods, not necessarily the schools.). I work in what is considered one of the "better" areas, but unfortunately a lot of crap goes on by me, too. I guess it can be that way for any school. Anyway, I agree with the poster that said you shouldn't be anxious, or the kids will know. If you are scared of the city, it might not be the best idea to teach there. On the other hand, you may surprise yourself. Sorry, I'm just rambling now!

I don't know the districts well, but the district I grew up in, District 27 isn't bad.
My elementary school was perfectly peaceful, and had great teachers. My junior high had a few incidents, but I think that's common across most NYC Junior High Schools.
Then again, I probably live in a neighborhood outside people would describe as bad or dangerous, but I don't see it that way. I would definitely feel safe teaching here.
Also, don't let "notorious" names fool you. There are for example, upscale parts of Jamaica that could compete with long island.

I work in District 27 and its fine there. Well, the middle school I work in is not so great, but I don't feel unsafe and its not because of the neighborhood. I have no problem parking my car, going to the store around there or anything like that.
I do think that middle/junior hs are just not great places when you stick 2000 hormonal kids in one place together!
