Out of State
Has anyone moved out of state just to teach?
***********
I moved down to Palm Beach Florida last year to teach and get a real job.
It was a great experience.

Re: Out of State
Sort of - I moved for more reasons than just to find a teaching job, but yes, I moved and am teaching in California.

Re: Out of State
After two years of working as a permanent sub with my masters in NY, I moved to VA for a teaching job. I have been here for almost 4 years and now taught 2nd grade for 2 years, and 1st grade for almost 2 yrs.

Re: Out of State
Those of you that have moved out of state to teach I have a question. How does the money compare. I have been teaching for 11 years in my district. There have been a ton of recent changes and I have to say that official this year I am miserable. I don't want to be there anymore. We are thinking about moving out of state. Right now I am making close to 80K with a masters+. My question would be how much of a pay cut should I be expecting? Can you girls give me an idea of what I am looking at?
Thank you so much!

It depends on where you are looking. North Carolina you might be making about 45-50. But somewhere like New Hampshire you'd be making 35.....
But everything is cheaper. Its all relative.

Re: Out of State
As a first year teacher with a master's in florida I was making almost 40. I also did a couple of extra things to make money but the salary was pretty good in comparison to the cost of living.

What do you think of the schools down there? Before they retired to Palm Beach county my MIL was director of curiculum (sp?) for a district in NYC and FIL was a teacher in NYC and they said they don't think the public schools are as good as up here, but the private schools are. Since they and their friends don't have kids in the schools we can't figure out what they are basing that on.

Re: Out of State
i loved the school i was at. It was a magnet school in Palm Beach county. Meaning any 6-8th grader intersted had to apply to go there. It wasn't based on grades or money, just random selection.
It was a high tech school. The whole school was 2 years old and WONDERFUL.
The building was wireless, I had a smart board, fast computer, CPS grading system, projector (in the ceiling) all in my classroom.
I didn't share my classroom. Every dept had laptops to share and go around to each room.
I really didn't see much of a difference between the 8th graders I had and the 8th graders I stuent taught.
I think the only reason why people think Florida is worse, is because the lack of quality teachers. They are really hurting down there.
I miss it. I really do. I loved having my own classroom. My staff was great. I regret every day leaving. I hate subbing.
We went down only for that reason.

Re: Out of State
I am in Northern Va with my masters and I am making 50+. The schools here are great, I can not believe all of the supplies and things that they give you when you start, what ever I needed the school provided!!

Re: Out of State
I teach in Northern VA... 11 years w/ a masters makes about $61k. I have heard rumors that they're trying to get a larger raise for teachers wtih masters for the new contract though.
