Getting Special Ed certified...

does anyone know offhand if Stonybrook offers this? before I call and get passed to a zillion people Chat Icon

Id love to do it somewhere CLOSER to home than Dowling Chat Icon
maybe CW POst ? does it look bad if I go back (just finished my masters last may) if I go back to a different school to get special ed.

do any schools have special ed/reading?
someone just told me her daughter got that years ago at dowling (in an old program).

Also, since Im fluent in spanish (and ItalianChat Icon ) Im pretty sure just being fluent is NOT enough to get me a job where bilingual is needed, right? wouldnt I legally need to be Sp Ed ?

Re: Getting Special Ed certified...

I do not know if Stony Brook has a Special Ed certification program but I do know some other answers to your questions.

First of all, I don't think it looks bad if you go back to school. In today's teaching job market you want to be has versitile as possible.

Secondly, I am pretty sure Dowling still has Special Ed/Reading but not 100% sure.

Finally, Special Ed certification is different from Bilingual. But your fluency in Spanish will come in handy for CSE meetings. We have a lot of spanish speaking students and parents in my district and having a special ed teacher who is fluent in Spanish definitely comes in handy.

Good luck!

I am not sure about Stony Brook. I've heard its difficult there anyway. Yes, dowling has it, but there is a better program at Long Island University in Brentwood. I got my Masters in Literacy there, it was 30 credits.

I know with the new Special Ed. guidlines you have to have certification in a subject area (Math, English, Social Studies)

Sped and bilingual are different, but like the others said, its a bonus, from what i know the only dual programs offered with sped would be elementary ed or early childhood. not sure about stonybrook, but im sure its listed on their site.

thanks for all the info everyone!

another spinoff question, someone told me today that some districts sponsor you to have your bilingual extension paid for. is that true? Chat Icon
