Portfolios on Interviews ?
We were required to create a portfolio in our grad seminar while student teaching, but were also told its NEVER even looked at, it's more of a politically correct thing to have and that's about it.. is this true ?
and how elaborate is your portfolio ? some of our classmates had really over the top ones, that some even said might be a bit much, was a scrapbook of her life
thoughts regarding portfolios ??
thanks!

Re: Portfolios on Interviews ?
I have been on serveral interviews when I was job searching. Ive been teaching for 4 years now. I NEVER used my "portfolio".
I think you have to sell yourself with your answers to interveiew questions. Reading professional material on your subject area and preparing for questions is the best thing to do... Not making your portfolio look pretty!

Re: Portfolios on Interviews ?
In my experience (both as the interviewee and the interviewer) the portfolio has never been asked for. However, if you have an excellent porfolio and think it can enhance the interview you should use it.
For example, if the interviewer asks about your instructional techniques and you have evidence in your portfolio of what they are - USE IT! I have heard from teachers in my school that they did this to their advantage.
If you're forced to take the time to make it, make it useful and use it to yoru own benefit.

Re: Portfolios on Interviews ?
In my experience, some will look and some won't but I was very happy to have it with me.

Re: Portfolios on Interviews ?
I just went on an interview for a sub position and the principal was happy to see that I brought mine only because all of my important things are in there (letters of rec, fingerprint clearance, etc.) and she looked through it. I wanted to make a condensed version of it though, it is 156 pages
I would bring one just in case they ask or notice that you have one.
