I would ask his vet. Due to his age, he might need senior cat food.

we have him on Purina One special care for Adult cat and Urinary Heath- due to fact that male cats can get kidney stones

but he eats a full bowl of food every day

If you look on the food labels it will give a recommendation based on weight. I suggest feeding both wet and dry.

Re: How much should a cat eat?

When we only had one cat, we would leave out a small bowl of cat food and a bowl of water all the time. We would also feed her one can of wet food in the morning and one at night. Some days she'd eat all the wet food, other days she stuck with the dry food.

Now that we have two cats, we still leave the dry food and water out, but we open two cans of wet food in the morning and another two at night. Not all of the wet food is eaten, but at least they have a choice.

It's hard to control their diets now that we have two cats, because the younger male cat is a big fatty and eats like there's no tomorrow.
