LI Marathon, 1/2 or 10k

Race info

I have not been able to train, so I think the 1/2 marathon will be out, and I have never done any races before, so maybe I should start smaller, I am thinking about doing the 10K.

Is anyone doing it?

you can always start with a 5K, they have them all over and often!

yeah a 5k I can totally do. I just wanted something a little more challenging, but not too hard that I would be disappointed with my results.

Re: LI Marathon, 1/2 or 10k

I'm a bit out of shape and was aiming to do the half, but I know I won't be able to get in the shape I want to in time, so I think I'm going to do the 10k too. I've never done a 10k, but I'm going to train the best I can and do some 5ks beforehand. Good luck to you!

To train for a 10K...just make sure you can run 5 miles and you will be fine.

For a half marathon...just make sure you can run 11-12 and you will be fine.

Good Luck...keep us posted on your progress~ Chat Icon

Re: LI Marathon, 1/2 or 10k

I can go 5 miles fine now.
My problem is I used to love the treadmill and then I started running outside and can't go back to the treadmill without losing my mind. So my training has stopped. I'm trying, but I doubt it'll get better until the weather gets warmer (I'm a baby....I don't run in the cold, kills my nose, eyes, and lungs)

I totally understand...that's why I run in the cold now. But the 30's lately have felt like spring so it's been nice.

You will be fine though...you can run 5....just get outside a few weeks before or you will be really sore after the race.

I have a 15K coming up in a few weeks...I have not run more than 7 miles in at least 2 months.

Have fun...I love these races!

What did you decide? I think you should go for the 1/2 marathon. You would be surprised what you can run during a race.Chat Icon

I don't know. I work 2 jobs now 4 days a week and I have yet to get on a schedule. I am going to see if I can start running some mornings and then do a last minute decision.

While a 1/2M doesn't require quite the same commitment as a full marathon, it is still a lofty goal to complete 13.1 miles. If you've never raced before, I say go with the 10K. Don't set your goal too high (the 1/2) and risk an injury which may only further put you off to the whole thing of running altogether. Instead, start with a good foundation and take it from there. Good luck!

Re: LI Marathon, 1/2 or 10k

yes, a 10K is more doable for me now. But I Think I might put it off all together, for the same reason as always, I don't have the time to devote to a structured training programChat Icon
