Student Teaching
Maybe you all can give me some advice. Here is some background:
I have a Bachelors in Psychology. I work as an Admin Assistant now making decent money. I started my Masters in Mental Health in September, only to be told by my employer that I will be taking a significant pay cut once I move into my new position. I always wanted to be a teacher, so I decided to take a semester off and go back in the Summer for teaching. How did you all handle student teaching and making money? I have a hefty mortgage to pay, so I'm a little concerned.

Like you, my undergrad was not in education. I was much younger when I student taught (22) at the grad level and was living at home at the time.
Student teaching is more than just the hours of the school day. Depending upon your assignment you will also be responsible for lesson plans, making up assessments, grading, etc. which very much carries over to the hours beyond the school day.
I waitressed every weekend when I was student teaching. At that age it was the most flexible hours wise and I earned pretty good money.
It is difficult for many adults to swtich careers and go into teaching for this reason.

My husband just finished his student teaching in Dec and is now subbing in a few school district. He also made a career change and we were worried also how we were going to swing it. I do make good money so that was ok and his salary when he was working we just banked. So that is what he used over student teaching. even though now he is subbing it still isn't alot of money or at least what he used to make but in the long run it will pay off. Hope is works out for ya!!!

I worked as a waitress and a manicurist while student teaching - it was beyond stressful but I managed and it can be done - I would save as much money as possible in the next couple of months

You pretty much wrote about me. I just finished student teaching, career change. I went from a FT
Director to a PT worker (at the job I now left for teaching) so I could bring in some income while student teaching. I was able to do a lot of my school work while at work too. Lesson plans, portfolio, work that went with the student teaching course.
Now I am a permanent sub/leave replacement in Phys Ed. And while it's great for my resume, the pay stinks! I keep telling myself this will all be worth it when I land a permanent teaching position.

when i student taught i left my f/t job and my DH (fiance at the time) paid my bills. it was tough but we worked it out

I was a paralegal before I became a teacher. I was lucky because they let me continue working while I was student teaching. I would be at school all day, then go to the law firm and work from about 3-7 or 3-8. It was rough because then I had to go home and do lesson planning, grading, not to mention grad school. But you know what, you do what you have to do, and it works out. I was older and like you I had my own place and had bills to pay and had to do it. Like someone else said, it is harder for older people to student teach for this reason, but it can be done. Good luck!
