ESL

Does anyone know anything about getting certified in ESL.. such as requirements and what happens regarding student teaching since I'm already a full time teacher. Does anyone know anything about Hunter's program?

I am looking into this myself. If I get the info, I will share it.

I am currently certified in English 7-12 and think that ESL is going to be my next step. (especially if I do not have a full time job in Sept)

I originally was going for Special Ed but changed to TESOL since it is more marketable. I will be graduating with my Master's this April from Touro, I transferred over the summer from Molloy. I was at Touro less than a year and have my degree. :)
It is very good not only for teaching here but my professor advised us that it is a degree that can be used overseas to travel and teach in other countries. I do not speak Spanish, only a little. The degree enables me to work with ANYone from infant to Adult to help them learn English. I love it and will go back in a year or so for a second masters in reading but there are 3 other girls I work with in my building and we all go to Touro for TESOL (Teacher of English to Second Language Learners). Sorry for the ramblings, I hope this helped. FM me for any more info needed.

I did my MA in TESOL, but I did it in Australia. I have no idea how to get certification and I work in Australia. If you do decide to work overseas in non-speaking English companies, they do not pay much money. Australia is good for teaching ESL and the pay is pretty good.

Another way is alternative certification through BOCES. I did my masters in TESOL/FL so I certified traditionally (and under the old regs) but my DH did his masters and student teaching in elementary ed and used BOCES for transcript evaluation so that he could get certified in English 7-12. I don't know if this option is still possible with the new regs, but it is worth a shot. The certification person at Nassau BOCES is Barbara Meskill and she is very knowledgable. It is worth giving her a call.

BTW, I have taught TESOL for 6 years and I adore it.
