Gyros

So I asked dh to come up with dinner ideas for next week before I do the grocery shopping, and he tells me he wants gyros. I've never even eaten one! I'm going to search epicurious & allrecipes.com, but I figured I'd check here first. Anyone have a good recipe?
Thanks!

Re: Gyros

Look on foodtv.com, Alton Brown made his own on good eats. I don't know how easy they are to make and I don't think you can buy the stuff at the store... Chat Icon

Re: Gyros

its pretty annoying to make

you need to get ground lamb meat, a bunch of spices then you cook it in a loaf pan and then put a brick on top of it to make it very compact

then you slice it thin and serve it on pita bread with tomatoes, lettuce, onions and tatziki sauce

tatziki sauce is very annoying to make because you have to drain the cucumbers

you might as well call up your locak greek or greek pizza joint and buy 2 for $5.95 each!

I agree. Getting the meat to taste like the way the gyro stand cooks it isnt easy. They use a big spit for the meat.

Re: Gyros

If you're willing to have then taste a little different..........I have grilled chicken & then sliced it very thin. Put it on a pita (get the pocketless kind, they are softer) w/ tomato, onion & lettuce. You can but tatziki sauce already made.

Re: Gyros

Thanks for the advice ladies...I'm probably more apt to send him to the diner, but I have found recipes for chicken gyros. I've never cooked lamb, so I'll either give the chicken a shot, or see if anyone offers me leftovers at easter & take it from there. And pre-made tzaziki (sorry, I know that spelling is way off) sauce does NOT sound like a bad idea!
