Who has flown with their pet?
We are taking Molly with us when we go to my parents house in Savannah and I have to be honest - I am freaking out.
I just bought the carrier tonight and she wants NO part of it. I put a bunch of treats in there and she sticks her head out as far as she can to reach them without putting her body in there.
I wanted her to have the next month to get used to it - but I don't think that's going to happen.
I will have her on Children's Benadryl - but does anyone have any tips at all what I should be doing over the next month or so?

owen would never tolerate a carrier, but sophie is a frequent flier. we have been taking her around in her carrier since we got her (she was around 1-2 yrs old) - on the LIRR, in the car, and on the plane.
i think the best thing you can do is put her in the carrier for short periods of time and bring her around, like in the car when you go for short trips. put some treats in there, as well as a small toy or two. i would keep the carrier in your lap at first, and then move it around the car to places where she can't see you but she can hear you.
we use children's easy dissolving benadryl. if i'm not mistaken, one of those has the equivalent of 12.5mg of benadryl in it. i would think this would be appropriate for most small dogs, but i would just check with your vet to make sure. you give the benadryl when you leave for the airport, this way the dog is calm by the time you go through security (you have to take them out for that, which always gets sophie all riled up).

Well I flew from Spain to NY with Ebony - he was 90 lbs. and 7 years old at the time. He was in the largest dog crate you could find and had to travel in the hold.
We gave him some relaxants that the vet prescribed.

We gave him some relaxants that the vet prescribed.
Thanks! We actually got Molly in the carrier tonight for a few minutes - we praised her TONS and gave her some treats! I'm hoping to do that every night so that she'll be comfortable in there.
My worst nightmare is that she will howl and bark the entire plane ride and we will get kicked off like that couple did a few months ago with their kid. lol

im sure theres something u can give her to knock her out.
p.s. some stewerdess are nice and dont mind if the dog sits on your lap

The vet said I could give her some childrens benadryl but I have been reading online how it's not good to give them sedatives when on a plane.
I will def. give her the meds if I have to - but I wanted to try and get her used to it - so I wouldn't have to!
I would LOVE if she could sit on my lap! That would be the best - but I think she would just growl at anyone that walked past us - so that may not work. LOL.
Jess - thanks for offering to doggysit. We do have people that could take care of her but I feel that since this is a trip we can take her on (we are going to my parents house in Savannah) we should take her with us because I'm sure there will be plenty of trips that we can't (like when we plan to go to Italy) -- the thought of leaving her for like 10 days makes me want to cry even now just thinking about it!

we flew with Baxter but he was a service dog in training at the time and he did not have to be in a carrier. They have puppy sedatives at Petsmart.

honestly, i have flown with sophie for about 10 trips (going AND returning, so really close to 20 flights), and all but once have given her benadryl. she has never had a problem.
one time my vet prescribed doggie valium for her, and seriously, when we landed and took her out her eyes were all bloodshot and i swear, each eye was pointing in a different direction.  she was totally stoned
benadryl is relatively short-acting; i highly recommend it!!

At first she was ok, then she started barking when placed in the bag under the seat (small shih tzu.) So when we do fly with her we medicate her and apologize profusely to everyone beforehand and then place the bag on our lap and pet her through it while in the air. As soon as that begins she calms down.

I don't have any specific flying advice-but as far as getting her used to the carrier-put her food dish in there for a few days...don't shut the door when she walks in to eat let her be able to walk in and out...and then start with small trips in the carrier, out to the car, etc...
also, I've given my dog benadryl before, but it was because he got a bee bite on his lip...but it did knock him out for a few hours...I would check with your vet about perhaps a sedative rather then benadryl though...maybe some puppy valium...

I would definitely get an injection for your dog from the vet. I flew my dog from AZ with me-a long flight and he was awake when he came out. I think they would be terrified if not asleep.

I flew with Zoey when she was a puppy and I was so nervous about this as well. She slept the entire time, never made a sound! My best advice would be to wear her out the night before so she's nice and sleepy.

I just wanted to post something in this thread...please, please, PLEASE don't ever fly with your pet in the cargo hold. To me, this seems like common sense, but people do it all the time.
Not only is it VERY noisy down there (sensitive ears! ), but it isn't climate-controlled, either. My mom's friend was moving cross-country with her cats. She put them in the cargo hold, not thinking much of it. She finally got to CA, and they were dead. Why?
They froze to death. 
I'm not posting this to scare the crap out of anyone, but...I just wanted to put it out there. She was absolutely devastated.

While I am truly shocked and sorry this happened to your mother's friend- it is absolutely NOT true that the cargo is not heated. There are separate areas within the cargo hold specifically for "freight" such as live animals.
Now I do know that there is no air conditioning, which is why most airlines won't ship animals in hot climates during the summer months (Phoenix, Las vegas, etc). I know for a fact, however, there ARE heated compartments- my DH used to be the guy who unloaded the planes and it was always nice to work the area where the live animals were during the winter (you'd be amazed at the menagerie that are shipped- tropical fish, reptiles, birds).
What happend to your mother's friend was a terrible thing- those animals were obviously put into the wrong cargohold. I hope the airline accepted responsibility and offered SOME sort of compensation- as they were obviously negligent. Poor kitties...
