Ideas on how to motivate a child with potential

I have this boy in my class who is bright and does his work, but doesn't like writing and just wants to do the minimum. His parents have tried everything...he gets excited but then doesn't do his work. It takes him hours. Ideas on how to get him to move and do more?

Is he being given the opportunity to write about things that interest him? Maybe have him make a collage of things closest to his heart, and work from there. That's about all I can think of to suggest.
