Animal Shelters
So we went to an animal shelter yesturday and I left in tears. Someone explain to me why and how a person can give up their pet after 10+ years, because they are moving?

I know, some were just so cute.
They had a cockerspaniel and an adorable white boxer puppy, who was deaf.
We only went to look but I so wish I could have taken one home!
Why can't people be more responsible and think more BEFORE they get a pet and the time/care/training they need and spay/neuter them!?

Please try not to judge other people's decisions. What if it was someone who needed to move to a nursing home or assisted living and couldn't take the pet with them? Or what if they had a child that was severely allergic to the pet and they had to give it up for their child's health? I'm sure that after 10 years it was not an easy decision and they are heartbroken to have to give up the pet.

That is what I was thinking. What happens when life throws you a curve that you can no longer properly take care of an animal? Things happen. It is sad, but it happens.
I think at least the person brought the animal to a place where they could be cared for properly.

I agree. I'm the type of person that says "I could NEVER." You need to look at the other side of things though...

My parents took in a very ill cat - right before winter. The cat turned out to be very very sick and the couldn't afford to pay the bills to treat it - they think what happened was the owners put the cat out because the probably couldn't afford to treat it. My parents ended up bringing it to a shelter that take care of sick animals. My mom feels so guilty but she did the right thing and she saved that cat from the cold winter.

I have rescued many dogs & I had recently had to re-home a dog. Although I am aware that there are extreme circumstances that might prevent a person from taking a pet with them or a child develops an allergy,etc... unfortunately that is not usually the majority.
Also, the municipal shelter near NSAL is not a no-kill shelter, as fas as I know. There are so many other options to a municipal shelter, most of which a high kill
I hope those dogs find loving homes

This debate always bothers me!
Life doesnt always go the way you planned it to. There are many circumstances which would force someone to give up an animal. I agree, it is heartbreaking BUT at least these people cared about their dog enough to place it in a no kill shelter. I have heard so many stories of people literally throwing their animals to the streets.
It is a sad sad thing but we never know what the other person was going through. As long as the person is trying to find the dog a good, loving home should be all that matters.

You are correct, the municipal shelter near NSAL is not a no kill, however, NYS law mandates that private shelters, like NSAL can not accept animals from the public, they must first go to a municipal shelter. Shelters like NSAL can then take animals from the municpal shelters. I used to work for NSAL, and our customer service people used to get a lot of abuse from people who were angry that we couldn't accept animals, but that's the way the law works.

I too used to think that a majority of the animals that wind up in shelters were there for reasons like their owners dying, children with allergies, etc.
Then I started watching Animal Cops on Animal Planet (based in NY). And saw what disgusting, selfish, uncaring people look like and the horrible things they do to animals. So many of them sign over their animals in a heartbeat, relieved to be rid of them.
I have known people who treat their animals like disposable things instead of part of their families, like they deserve to be treated. It's not such a big deal to them to give the animals away simply because they were tired of it.
I no longer have as much optimism towards pet owners. It's refreshing when I actually do see people care for their animals the way they should be. I can only hope that I can be a great pet owner, to try and make up for some of the really bad ones.

That is horrible!
There is no way I could ever give up my puppy. I never understood the love for an animal until we got our dog. Now i cannot imagine losing him

Oh I know, and I am hoping that Michael Bloomberg continues to try & make NYC a no-kill city (usually LI follows if NYC passes a law...)
It is very unfortunate, however there are also breed rescues & private fosters that are not under the same restrictions as organizations like NSAL.
Even though having to give up a pet is sad, what is sadder still is the lack of information for pet owners on how to find proper options other than the municipal shelters

I was in CVS the other day and when I came out I went to put my bags in the passenger side of my car... There was a car parked next to me with the window opened a good amount and a Mastiff was inside...
At first, I was like "whoa" b/c it's a big dog and caught me off guard... Then, he was friendly, so I was like "hey pup!!" and peaked inside only to see that he was SKIN AND BONES... I mean, so stick thin it looked like he was hanging on to life... His ribs, his spine, his legs all were sticking out and his nails were overgrown.
HOW HARD IS IT TO FEED THE DAMN DOG???? You obviously have a decent amount of money with your new Honda Civic and you bought a PURE BRED Mastiff and it has a fancy leather collar... WHY ARE YOU NOT FEEDING IT??
I was SO angry that I took the plate number down and called the ASPCA... Unfortunately, there was not much they could do b/c the plate happened to be a Massachussetts plate... So, they said they would forward the info to that state's Animal Cruelty office but who knows what will happen?
That POOR dog!!!! I wanted to say something to the CREEP that came out to the car but I just didn't want to lose my temper, knowing that I would... So I let it go with a dirty look.
It has been DAYS and is still bothering me constantly

There are definitely times and situations when re-homing a dog is the right thing to do. However, I believe that the majority of dogs are not given up for those reasons. I have been to shelters a few times and leave in tears each time. My heart breaks for all the animals in abandoned and in need of love and a good home. I wish people would educate themselves and think hard before they bring a pet into their home.

i agree. i don't think it's fair to judge other people's decisions. we have NO idea whatsoever about the circumstances that might have led that person to give up their pet after 10 years. for all we know, it was a dying elderly person with no family or friends, who might be sitting in hospice somewhere mourning the loss of his/her pet. of course, it could also be someone who just got tired of his dog. but the point is, we don't know - so why judge? jmo.
