To Follow Through or Not
What would you do in this situation? I went for an interview almost two weeks ago (on a Friday) at which the woman said she was very eager to hire within the next week or so, so I should get her my references by Monday the latest. At the same time, there was a written exercise she wanted to give me and would send it so I could work on it over the weekend.
Well, I immediately sent a thank you saying I was eager to work on the exercise. Then I sent an email that night with all my references. Nearly two weeks has now passed with no contact, absolutley NONE - not even a thank you for my references, there are delays, etc.
Now, I jsut got an email, she says she's sorry but its been busy, and here's the exercise - again, please get it back to her ASAP. The exercise is quite lengthy and will take some time to do it well.
Should I bother or withdraw my candidacy? I'm pretty PO'd that she took this long and everything is rush rush from me, but she takes her time. I don't think I even want to work for someone like that then.

Re: To Follow Through or Not
Depends how badly you want the job. I know for me searching for a teaching job, I am at their mercy and would do anything for a job but maybe your field is not quite as competitive. That would be the deciding factor for me. But I do not think as a potential employee you should expect TOO much. I tend to be super organized and super punctual and used to get offended when people were not the same towards me but it's just the way it is. I doubt it was malicious or anything.

Re: To Follow Through or Not
Here's the thing They could legitimately be busy.
My issue though is--you could be getting a real glimpse of the copr culture there.
How long will it take to do? More that a half an hour and I would reconsider unless the position is something you really wanted

Re: To Follow Through or Not
Good point. I don't think it was malicious at all - I recognize that people are busy and hiring someone takes a long time but I've been through a lot of bad jobs lately with bad bosses and I just feel like I'm already getting a negative vibe from this place. I think it is rude and unprofessional not to at least send a quick email to the person "We've very busy at the moment, but I will get back to you within the next few weeks" - that's all that was needed to make me feel better about it. Am I being too hard?

Well... It all depends on how bad you really want this job. It seems as if this woman has really been caught up- I guess you can see how crazy busy it gets in that company. I would do the exercise- then see what happens. 2 weeks is a long time, but at least you know she hasn't forgotten about you.

if you want the job, look the other way and just do as she asks.

I agree. If you want the job, do the assignment.
I wouldn't let an HR person's lack of response deter me from a job I was originally interested.
When you get the job & have been there awhile, you can mention to your boss that you almost didn't take it because of her follow through skills.

I agree with this. IF you really want the job, you should do the assignment. Things could be crazy there, deadlines, etc. maybe the HR person was told to put the hiring on hold for a while. I know where I am it took forever for HR to get back to me because they were waiting to hear about budgets and stuff.

I would do the exercise and get it in anyway. Rather be in a position where they offer you the job and you can decide of you want it or not, rather than not even exploring what the possibility is.
I agree-- it's rude. But, that is what job searching is all about.

I agree with this. I'd probably do it and decide later whether or not I want the job if it's offered, but I'd be prepared for the fact that this might be how she operates as a boss too.

I would still do it.
She could be telling the trth, she si really busy and now that so long has passed she needs it even more ASAP. not very considerate, but I could see it happenning. In the job I'm about to start I have to do a LOT of recruiting and interviewing and hiring, along with many other things, so I could see how a situation like that could occur. I'm supposed to look for people who do everything on time and quickly, meanwhile I know I probably won't be able to do the same at busier times of the year.

Thanks everyone - this was helpful. I am going to do the assignment and see what happens. If anything, it is a good exercise for me intellectually.

Re: To Follow Through or Not
OK, no sooner did I write that I was going to do it - I told her I'd get her something by Monday - she asked me to have it by tomorrow! She said she's trying to see my reaction time since much of their work is fastpaced - ugh, sounding more and more like I don't want this, but we'll see.

Re: To Follow Through or Not
What kind of job is this?
Is this the HR person or the person you'd be working for directly?
Also, are you currently working full-time?

Its for a Program officer position at a public foundation. This is the person I'd working directly for. I did do the assignment and sent it to her - she said it looked good so we'll see. If I'm offered the job I need to think about it and consider what happened to see if I'd want to work for that type of place.
I am working full time, which makes it difficult to do these types of things.
