Question about Squirting Cats with water...

One of the top suggestions i've gotten to keep cats off furniture is to spray them with water. It does make him get off but then he comes back. Do we have to keep doing that until he learns??? Also he's only like 4 months old so is it gonna take time for him to learn the rules?

Thing is that when we are not home there is nothing stopping him, so how is he going to learn...

you just have to keep spraying him. eventually he will associate the couch with water and he just wont do it. he is still a baby, so it may take alittle time. cats are smart though, he should catch on quick

Re: Question about Squirting Cats with water...

yeah that's what I figured. Guess I have no choice but to keep on spraying him.

DH was like "the only thing that ***** is that you get water everywhere"...um so what it's just water...LOL LOL LOL

it's kinda fun though cuz I sneak up behind him and spray him with a water gun when he's on something he's not supposed to be on and he just jumps right off and runs away then he comes back and each time he will get sprayed with the water gun until he learns.

This is all so new to me. I was used to DH's old cat Lucy. She was old and didn't do anything but use her litter box, eat and sleep...and sometimes just sit by DH for company...

yes, it took us a good year before TJ & Lincoln learned to not scratch the furniture.....and we used the water trick.

Now we have an old rug in the basement that they go scratch. But they know that they can scratch that...and not the furniture upstairs! Brats.

Re: Question about Squirting Cats with water...

Thank you so much. I was starting to get stressed out because we spray him with water and we also put this spray on furniture that has a smell that is supposed to turn them off, but he always goes on our furniture, I mean we bought him a kitty condo so he would lay off our furniture!

But I guess we gotta keep on it until he learns...

It will get to the point where all you have to do is pick up the bottle, and the cat will take off. We use it to keep our cats off the kitchen table, and I just pick up the bottle- I don't have to squirt it.

That's funny cuz he's already doing that...sometimes all DH has to do is point the watergun and he takes off. He's starting to recognize what it is and what happens. We will let him stay on the couch (it's covered) as long as he sits nice and doesn't climb all over the place. the minute he does that he gets squirted. He is def. not allowed on the dinning room furniture. Yesterday he slept on the couch all afternoon and at night when it was bed time for us that's when he decides its' playtime...LOL He likes sitting next to DH when he's doing school work.

He's just starting to discover the window ledge. One of the rooms he is allowed in is the computer room and yesterday he went in and hopped on a chair and made his way to the window ledge. He's memorized by it...
