Sleeping on your back

At my last visit (26 weeks) my doctor mentioned that he really would like me to avoid sleeping on my back from here on in. I am finding it to be unavoidable. I am sleeping well, using a body pillow to sleep on my side, but I usually wake up on my back at some point in the night. I don't know how I could avoid it....TIA for any suggestions.

Re: Sleeping on your back

I think it's probably hard to avoid it if you do it in your sleep, but just try to start out on your side and if you wake up on your back, just flip to your side... I'm sure everything will be fine if you do that.

Re: Sleeping on your back

Maybe you could put a pillow behind your back when you fall asleep kind of as a reminder not to lay on your back. I know that I wake up often during the night to go to the bathroom - and often find myself on my back and not always on my left side- but i reposition myself quickly and fall back asleep. I don't know if there is anything you can really do about that.
Another piece of advice would be is to buy a body pillow and adjust yourself to wrapping yourself around that - so you don't end up in that position again.

it's hard to avoid...but try putting a pillow behind you to prevent you from being totally on your back. It's best for you and baby circulation wise!

I did the same thing! I read that you will feel the "need" to turn over when it becomes bad for the baby. You would have to ignore that uncomfortable feeling in order to do any harm. Don't worry too much about it...

Re: Sleeping on your back

I wouldn't worry too much - as you go along in your pregnancy it gets harder and more uncomfy to sleep on your back because of all the weight and pressure on your organs, so I think you will stop naturally.
