do you pay for the vacation up front or leave a deposit?

I think it depends how quickly you are leaving for the trip
I booked a few months in advance both times I used a TA so we were able to leave a deposit - then the balance about a month before the trip

Sometimes you have to leave a dep for the trip but pay for the air up front.
