RE recommendation - thanks SO MUCH and more info

I have 2 questions about reproductive endocronologists.

First, we live on LI but I work in NYC - where should we get a RE in terms of appointments, etc.? I can't miss a lot of work, so with commuting, it seems like it would be easier to go in NYC, right?

Can anyone recommend a doctor in either LI or NYC?

TIA !

Re: RE recommendation

The best RE clinics are in NYC. I can recommend a RE on Long Island that I like but the clinic is not one I would recommend. It's so over crowded right now and statistics are poor.

Also sometimes a person you think is board certified, isn't :) It's very interesting what's going on in these RE clinics ....There are only about 500 'true" RE's in the nation. It's incredibly rigorous to get that certification.

Cornell Weill, and NYU are considered the nations top 2 and top 4 clinic. That's where the 'research" is going on. If you work close to those clinics I would recommend skipping Long Island all together and heading to either of them.

Re: RE recommendation

Thanks! I will be somewhat limited due to what my insurance covers (United), but I will look those places up!

Re: RE recommendation

Do you know where I could find a list of the top clinics? I tried to do a search but could not come up with anything and I am interested to see if my place is listed.

This is me too, but I live in Queens, I can tell you from my experience to go with a dr in NYC. I had 2 previously drs in LI and it just wasn't working out, they never gave me early appts for b/w, etc.
I now go to NYU (it's at 38th st & 1st Ave) it's about a 10 minute walk from my job, they do monitoring 7 days a week from 7am -9am, I am usually in and out in about 25 minutes for my b/w and u/s.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask me.
I'm actually self pay since my insurance doesn't cover it so I'm not sure which insurance they accept.
Also this week's NY magazine is about the NYU clinic and they work they are doing with freezing eggs

Good luck!

Re: RE recommendation - can anyone give me a phone number?

thanks everyone

I called NYU but they don't take my insurance at all

I then called Cornell and they don't take my insurance either, but one of the doctors associated with them does - I have an appointment with Dr Kligman, has anyone heard of him?

I am debating whether to just find a hospital and doctor that takes my insurance but I don't know what is more important - going to a better place, or not having financial hardship!

I think only you and your DH can make this decision. I think since it's covered by insurance you should see Dr. Kligman (I'm sorry I don't know anything about him) and then see what happens.

There are some of us that have started at one clinic and then moved on to others for whatever reasons.

As for the finances, you can always remortgage, use your credit card or some card companies offer loans just for this.

Also double check exactly what your insurance covers - make sure all procedures (including IVF and IUI), prescriptions, bloodwork, sonos, etc are covered, not just your actual visit with Dr. Kligman
Good lucK and much baby dust!!

Re: RE recommendation - I am seeing Dr Kligman?

I like Dr Kligman a lot. He did my last transfer, and I have had him for monitoring quite a few times.

Going to a better place is more important IMO. BTDT.

And I think Donna is right, Kligman will accept insurance for your consult, but not for IUI or IVF, that is billed under the clinic, CRMI.

Re: RE recommendation - I am seeing Dr Kligman?

Another top of the line center is in North Shore university hospitals Center for human reproduction.
They are also top of their game, on the cutting edge with their technology and have high sucess rates.
I used Dr. Rosenfeld, but the other 3 doctors are good too..
I think their number is 516-562-baby

Re: RE recommendation - I am seeing Dr Kligman?

I would also, speak to a representative from your insurance and see, if they cover "out of network" doctors/procedures.

Unfortunately, the top clinics want to be paid well. A lot of insurance companies don't pay, very well. That's when the clinics get choosey. Some clinics take just about any insurance lol Those clinics are so busy, that your care is being compromised.

This is all so hard !!!

The way I look at it is. If you are going for ovulation induction....like femara or clomid....at first. Possibly iui's...etc....I would perhaps, go to a clinic that covers it. I would spend a lot of time being sure that the doctors are coming up with a plan that makes sense for you.

If you need to move on to something that involves a lab, embryologists, and genetic diagnostics....I would go to the two clinics that are rated the best in the nation.

A lot of time, your meds which are a huge part of the cost are covered. So think about that as well. A lot of time your insurance makes you pay some out of pocket expense for IVF as well, so take that into consideration.

Personally, I am at a crossroad myself. I am probably changing RE's in the near future.

Re: RE recommendation - I am seeing Dr Kligman?

wow, thank you all so much for the information

apparently (and surprisingly), even though there are several doctors that take United Insurance, there aren't many clinics that do...but United DOES cover 70% of "out of network" expenses, so now I need to figure out what 30% of the cost will be for IUI or IVF and related meds

I guess I will ask Dr. Kligman this at my first appointment and then if it seems like it's not do-able I will have to reconsider

Re: RE recommendation - thanks SO MUCH and more info

If your insurance covers family planning, IUI's will be covered. It's a NY State Mandate, unlimited IUIs until 44 years old.

If you work for a national company, sometimes they do not follow the state mandates. ERISA Act allows companies to not have follow, state mandates.

Re: RE recommendation - thanks SO MUCH and more info

I do work for a company but what makes it "national?" I am pretty sure I don't get unlimited IUI's b/c the insurance website, under family planning, says it covers IVF and artificial insemination, up to $10K in-network and only 70% out of network

Re: RE recommendation - thanks SO MUCH and more info

Since your insurance covers infertility, you will get unlimited IUI's until the age of 44.

What I mean by national, is that the company is a national company. For instance, they have branches throughout the US. New York has a mandate for IUI's, New Jersey has an even better mandate that covers IVF, however, states like Alabama, don't have any mandates for infertilty So if your company, is located throughout the US, they don't have to cover infertility.

Here is a list of companies and what they cover. Maybe yours is listed :)

If anyone is looking for a job, I highly recommend Long Island Railroad lol , wow, great benefits :)
