The heat and your pets - if you don't have AC

What do you do to keep them cool while you are at work?

DH and I just moved into our new home and we don't have CAC yet. So I opened some windows, put the fan on high and left plenty of cold water and a bowl of ice cubes.
Anything else I can do? Will she be ok with all of that??

Thanks!!

Re: The heat and your pets

I leave Bailey in the kitchen - its on teh first floor (no basement) and we have porcelain tile, its usually nice and cool. I make sure its shady, leave pleanty of water, fans, etc.

Today FH went on a job interview (he's a teacher) so he just left the A/C on for him.

Re: The heat and your pets

I leave the AC on...I always afraid he will overheat. But I think as long as you have a fan on, all will be fine.

Re: The heat and your pets

Since we're crate training our puppy, we left her tons of water and directed a fan right on her when DH left this morning.

I'll go home at lunch to feed her and play with her.

Re: The heat and your pets

when I was at the apartment I kept the AC on for the cat. We have CAC here but the puppy is so EXHAUSTED in this heat. I give her a "Chilly Bone" it is put in the freezer and turns cold for them to chew..I woudl suggest that, Jasmine loves it and it is like an icee for the dog. Chat Icon

Re: The heat and your pets - if you don't have AC

What about those of you who don't have AC in the living area, kitchen?

Like I said, I set up the fan, plenty of water and opened the windows. I'm Chat Icon she's ok.

We only have it in the bedroom and it's not an energy efficient one. I'd also hate to think of her confined to the bedroom all day.

I was thinking of maybe the basement (it's finished) and it's much cooler down there. But I know as soon as I put her down thre, she'll want to follow me upstairs Chat Icon

I feel awful.Chat Icon

We gate Cooper in the hallway (which is nice and dark and cool) with the fan on him, fresh cold water and his crate with his bed in it. The tile in the hallway is marble so it stays pretty cool and he'll lay on that in front of the fan.

Re: The heat and your pets - if you don't have AC

We don't have AC in the house, so I left her out of the crate today with a bowl of ice and a bowl of water.
We have all the ceiling fans on and I figured she can lay on the hardwood floor in the living room (which is where she likes to lay when it's hot)....

I felt terrible leaving her this morning.Chat Icon

That's exactly what I did and we have tile in the bathroom & kitchen, so hopefully she's hanging out in there.

Look at how guilty we all feel and there are people out there like that byb monster Chat Icon

Re: The heat and your pets - if you don't have AC

You can get a window AC unit for as little as $70-$80. As long as you have a place where it fits, you should do it and then leave the dog in whatever room it's in. Or leave the bedroom on and at least give her the option to go in and out of that room. Leave tons of water, maybe with ice cubes in the bowl.

DH just called and he bought a unit for the dining/living area. So Dottie will be in cool comfort tomorrow!!

I leave plenty of water out, and leave the bathroom doors open - they love to sleep on the cool tiles. Also have the ceiling fan on.
