Invisible Fence

does anyone have it? any insight if it is worth it? i hear its about $300+

I dont like the idea of them.
But our neighbor has one for his Doberman, and never leaves his lawn

thats good to know they dont leave the yard. total fencing is not a $$$
option right now, but jack does need to run around and this may be a choice

I am not a fan. They are not 100% reliable, and for certain breeds of dog the collar can be painful and even dangerous.

You can use other methods to train your dog not to leave your property if you are concerned that they are a flight risk.

My BILs neighbor has it but their retrievers always seem to end up in BILs yard anyway.

Not a fan. It's a shock collar.


Also you should know that you STILL have to train the dog. You can't just slap that on and expect the dog to understand!

I don't know much about them but...There was a case recently (I believe it was Huntington -- it was in the LI Section of the NY Times) and a family had it for their female German Shepard. Some neighborhood dogs came onto the property and the female dog uncharacteristically bit them in defense. After some court issues, she had to be put down. The point was that other dogs can easily come onto your property and your normally well behaved dog may react in a way you don't expect.

Our neighbors have it for their golden. He used to run through it but they recently "upped" the voltage and now he doesn't.

I don't think I could personally knowingly shock any animal. It just doesn't seem humane, in my opinion.

This is why, until I can afford a fence, I am not getting a dog.

A friend of mine has it for their Vizsla (very hyper) and it has worked sometimes and not worked other times.

He had a few instances where his dog chased a cat or rabbit and ran right through the invisible fence. Because it's a shock thing, if they are moving really fast and focused on something else they may not even notice it.

Other than those few times, she stays on the property.

For me, I wouldn't do it cuz Misty would be one of those dogs to bolt right through the shock.

What about just fencing the backyard - that's what we have. And try teaching him the boundaries of the front yard slowly.
