Back from Key West
We had a FANTASTIC time! We can't wait to plan our next trip.
We took the speed ferry from Ft. Myers to Key West. It was a great way to travel. There is a bar on the boat that opens at 8:30AM We took it over the weekend, so there was a surcharge. It cost us $250 round trip and it's a 3 1/2 hour ride. It leaves 9AM from FT. Myers M-Su. It leaves 6PM from Key West M-Su. **My advice, if you are going to take the ferry back from Key West, check in EARLY. They let you check in starting at 1:30PM and you can leave your bags there. You'll be part of the first boarding group. THen you can get yourself SWEET seats on the ferry (the cushion couches w/ tables). We didn't check in until 3PM and had to keep our bags w/ us. On the way back we were limited to small uncomfortable seats. Not the best way to spend a tired 3 1/2 hours.
We stayed at the Best Western Hibiscus. It was $116 per night, w/ a free continental breakfast (bagels, waffles, fruit, danish, cereal and hard boiled eggs). Rooms were clean and well air conditioned. The only con, they have a salt water pool and it was about 95 degrees the entire time. So NOT refreshing.
Thanks to all who made recommendations. HEre's where we went:
Margaritaville (lunch): GREAT hamburgers! Cooked to perfection. Inexpensive drinks too.
Fogarty's/Flying Monkey Saloon - KILLER drinks. Great lunch menu. Fantastic salads. All of the food was great and very inexpensive.
Louie's Backyard - beautiful restaurant. Amazing wine menu. Fantastic food. Excellent service. More high end dining. For 2 our bill was around $130 and we didn't drink much and didn't have dessert. Definitely a nice change from Duvall street.
Irish Kevins - great 2 man band. Soo much fun. Sooo hungover the next morning.
Dirty Harry's - a lot of fun. 16oz beers - a plus w/ DH. They have a night club upstairs (Ricks). Fun music. The crowd was a bit younger, so we felt a little out of place.
Hogsbreath - great time, great atmosphere (if you are in to biker bars, which we like)
Sunset at Mallory Square - It took us forever to find parking (we rented an electric golf cart). So we just made the very end. Definitely check it out. It's breath taking.
Hemingway House - Great tour and a wonderful piece of history.
Some pics from HH:
This is a water fountain for the cats. It's actually a urinal from the original Sloppy Joe's (which is now Capt. Tony's)
Some of the beautiful flowers on the property
And the Southernmost Point in the Continental US.
