question
We went to one kennel club in east meadow and saw a shih poo- she was 1600, i loved her but didnt want to bring her home without dh seeing her first.
i then found another place in flushing for the same dogs- shih poos, and he said the dogs cost 650.
now what gives by charging that much of a difference in price?
Please explain.
Thanks!

Re: question
don't buy from a petshop!!!!!!!!
also, those dogs are MUTTS therefore you should not pay purebred prices for them.
why someone is purposely breeding these dogs is beyond me.

I agree 100% - that store in East Meadow is disgusting. My mother took me in there and I couldn't beleive that A: They leave those dogs in the window all day B: The prices they charge
If you are going to get a mix - go to NSAL, they have plenty.

huh?! Sure they do!!! There is no such thing as a "shih poo" anyway, its just a "desginer" way of saying Poodle mixed with Shih Tzu.... i hope you don't really think you can't adopt one of those from a shelter.
Let alone Petfinder.org
Please stay far far far away from any pet shop. (and any "breedeR" who breeds these mixes)
if you're not sure why we stay stay clear of pet shops you can read up on Puppymills and i can promise it will probably make your stomach turn. Pet shops=puppymill
here is one poodle/shih tzu (no photo though)

Re: question
ITA agree with the above posters. Also, Shih Tzus are already low allergy dogs, so why they "need" to be mixed with Poodle is beyond me.
Pet store dogs are mill dogs, plain and simple. They LIE about their lineage and about the conditions they came from. The reason it is so much is because the shops KNOW that no educated consumer would buy from them, so they feed on the (excuse the expression) ignorance & impulsive nature of they "window shopper." They lie about their "pedigrees" and are bred in the worst of conditions. In addition, it is not uncommon for mill dogs to cross breed unintentionally. Of course the millers do not report this & subsequently the dogs are not the "purebreds" they claim to be.
Please please please do not buy from a pet shop. Please research...

what is the problem with 'designer' dogs and mixes?
my parents owned a 'cockapoo' (Cockerspaniel and poodle mix) and she was a great dog.
my parents now own a 'maltipoo' (maltese and poodle mix) and she is just as wonderful.
why do most people on here think they are so awful?

theres nothing wrong with the actual dog. its the way they were bred and the fact that they are bred that ius wrong.
designer dogs are bred PURELY for profit. ONLY puppymills and backyard breeders breed these dogs.
they figure some sucker will come along with the right amount of money and not enough knowledge and will buy one.
the whoel entire point of breeding is to further the breed and better the lines.
with these dogs there is no breed, there is no standard, there is no way to "further" it or better its lines. you can not show these dogs. they are purely bred for money.
if you want a specific mix, thats totally fine, its how you obtain that dog that is the important. to be honest though i never saw the point of getting a mixed breed dog unless its from a shelter. if you want to buy a dog why wouldnt you buy a purebred?
if people would only learn and NOT purchase these dogs for obsurd amounts of money then it will keep puppymills and backyard breeders in business. and thats no good. for every one dog bought from one, 3 more die.
as you saw from petfinder you can get a puppy of that mix by adopting one.
people should only spend alot of money on a dog if it is purebred form a REPUTABLE breeder. and there are two prices. one for pet quality and one for show quality.
it seems like these designer dogs always go for show quality prices. and for what?

Re: question
I'm totally on-board with not buying from pet stores and getting mixed breed dogs from petfinder or some other rescue source, but I'm not sure I understand why people who show dogs are the standard everyone holds other breeders up to. I think showing dogs is kind of mean too and cruel in its own right (Not the same as a puppy mill or something horrible). I mean, I knew someone who had a show dog once and the poor dog wasn't even allowed on grass for fear it might leave green marks on their perfect white coat...that seems like it wold be pretty awful for a dog too!

Very well said. I just don't understand this trend in designer breeds. They are just mixed breeds with an expensive price tag. I would rather adopt a great dog from a shelter.

Show dogs are considered the highest quality dogs, they are the best of their breeds. To have a puppy that is descended from a show dog means that you are getting a very high quality bloodline, which means that is why they are charging a high price. Only people who truly love the breed and want to keep the breed "pure" (for lack of a better word) truly know how to make a good match to breed a dog.
Show dogs are not treated cruelly, I would say they are treated like doggie royalty during their show days.

ITA. Designer breeds is a relatively newer phenomenon, and the problem with breeders who breed purely for profit (versus bettering the dog breed), is that the best interest of the dogs is often lost.
No dog is 100% safe from health problems - whether they are a purebreed or mutt or designer breed. However, certain breeds are predisposed to particular health problems. Poodles for instance are prone to Addison's Disease, Hip Dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy. While a mix of a poodle and whatever dog breed may appear great on paper (hypoallergenic, better personality than a poodle....etc), the breeding of these mixes hasn't been done with enough frequency to accurately predict what health problems will result from the interbreeding of the two breeds. Will it amplify the health problems of one of the breeds? Aquire all the health problems? Aquire new health problems? This makes screening for these problems difficult (reputable breeders will screen both parents and the resulting offspring for prevalent health issues that are characteristic of the breed).
So really, you are getting a pet that may be a sweet and amazing dog, but you just can't predict what health problems will plague him/her down the road. I just think it is sad, cause we all want a pet with a great personality, but we also want pets that will live as long as possible and be as healthy as possible throughout their lives. Designer breeders have lost sight of this, and instead are simply interested in the almight buck.

i dont follow at all. show dogs are treated like kings.
the actual showing part is running a lap in the dog ring for 20 seconds. i cant see ho that is mean.
i think that not letting your dog on the grass is just purely insane

totally agree, and i can speak from experience. i've said this a million times, but i have a "schnoodle" that i adopted from a shelter who, turns out, was likely a puppy mill dog. sweetest dog in the world!! but turns out he has addison's disease and we almost lost him back in march now he's in good health, but requires monthly injections and daily oral medication which, honestly, hurts the pocket...
please avoid this if you can. adopt an "accidental" shih-tzu mix, which is likely to be much healthier...
