I just wanted to let you know that you have to book Alcatraz pretty far in advance. My BIL and SIL were in san fran last week and they thought they could go on a tour to alcatraz, but it was all booked and they were told that they should have booked way in advance.

My sister told us that, so we booked it about 6 months ago. Thank you for letting me know.Chat Icon

If you're into ghosts and that sort of things, we went on a ghost hunt city tour in SF last year and it was GREAT. FM me for info.

Restaurants we loved: Millenium and Herbivore.

Have fun!

It's cold at night right now in San Francisco, so pack pretty heavy things...jeans, long sleeved shirts, lighter jackets...see my review a few posts down..

We went to Alaska at the end of June, and it was colder than we expected. (Not sure how different the temp would be in mid August.)

Especially visting the glacier, etc it was cold. I had on 3 or 4 differnet layers and two blankets around me.

I brought 2 heavy sweatshirts and long sleeved tshirts for each day, and layered.

We took the Dawn Princess to Alaska last summer! You'll like it.

It's cold up there, even in August. Be prepared for rain and 65 degree days. If it's warmer and very sunny, I'll be jealous Chat Icon Pack good walking shoes, jeans, and layers - I wore a tshirt with a hoodie most days & was fine, but if you're going up on a glacier you'll want a heavier jacket. You might want an umbrella too, in case it rains harder - maybe a small lightweight one that fits in a purse or backpack?

San Fran is chilly too, but not as bad. The mornings and evenings will be cool though. You already said you're going to Alcatraz, so the only other recommendations I have are to walk around the touristy Fisherman's Wharf, and go to the Ghirardelli store for sundaes! I think there's a Japanese tea garden somewhere too, but I didn't get to go there so I can't advise.

Have fun!
