How much do you do outside of 'contract hours'?

I'm not talking about grading, etc. But during the summer, etc. When school is not in session...

Do you get paid?

I came in to do a panel interview last June, and will be in 2 days next week for a training session, and doing the master schedule. I feel like it's something that's 'not required... but you better be there'

How much of this do you do? What kind of compensation do you get?

This summer I am doing the master schedule with 2 other teachers, and we are going to get paid for it. They didn't tell us how much, but it's probably not a lot.

we get paid $62.75 per hour for any work that is done outside school hours. this would include after school homework clubs, after school programs funded through Title I and additional work that can't be done during school hours.

Anytime we are asked to stay for PD we get paid it's about $40 an hour and it's called per session. I got paid for a workshop that I went to on a Saturday...it was a nice little check

I try to do as much per session as I can. Test prep, ela or math grading, whatever I can getmy hands on. It comes out to be about $30 after taxes, so I have recieved some amazing pay checks!

Any club or work you do outside of the school day you should be compensated for.

I am sure your teacher's union would not be happy if you are doing things for nothing. Unions have worked a long time to get to the current working conditions. Just my 2 cents.

Ugh - I would be a millionaire for all the stupid workshops and training sessions I attended - we get recertification points, but after 2 years of teaching, I've already gotten all of mine.

there are teacher associations, which kind of lobby on our behalf, but there are no 'unions'

we can't strike, but can 'work to the rule' - just work our contract hours and refuse to do anything beyond.

Supervise sporting events/school functions - per session stipend of approx. $70

Grant funded tutoring - approx $45 per hour

Grant funded staff development - approx. $60 per hour

Summer school - approx $2150 per class.

I keep busy!

I was going to agree with a pp about checking with your union. It is easy to set a precedent with working for "free" on certain things.
Being that you are not union, I guess things can be paid differently. Under a contract, many positions (as pp have named) are set in the pay they offer.

Re: How much do you do outside of 'contract hours'?

The only things I have done over the summer are setting up my room (unpaid) and summer school (paid). During the year I am involved with various committees that add up to about 3 nights a year unpaid, where the kids have special night - science quest, literacy night, etc.

I realize that perhaps I should get a life and stay away from school! Chat Icon

Luckily my DH is just about as involved at his school as I am at mine, otherwise I think he'd kill me!Chat Icon

I was unaware about the lack of unions in VA. Sorry.

We have unions on LI but we can't strike either. just so you know.
