Re: My story
I'm not all familiar with the meds that your gynecologist would like to start you on. If I were in your shoes, I would go see an RE. They are some times better equipped to handle syndromes that effect fertility. I was recently tentatively diagnosed with PCOS which I don't believe I have. They kind of came to that by eliminating everything else. I don't have any history that would point to PCOS. I refused Metaphorim and opted to try and lose weight on my own. I have been slightly successful. I am in my second month of Clomid and that has helped me to ovulate. I just started charting so I really can't help with that too much.
I hope that the process goes well for you and that your stay here is short and sweet. Lots of baby dust!

Re: My story
Good luck to you!
I don't know much about the drugs you were talking about but I wouldn't start anything until you feel comfortable with your doctor. My RE is in Mineola, I loved them. They didn't rush me, ever. I was 100% comfortable with them and all the different things they were doing with me. A lot of the girls here go to them, their website is www.rsofny.com
I love my OBGYN but she was just not as helpful as my RE. She also didn't know as much as they did and I always felt rushed with her. Plus...the RE got me PG in 3 month! So for that I am forever thankful.
Since you are 30 and your periods are not regular and you've been trying for a year, I would give the RE a shot. At least go for a consultation and hear what they have to say and see if it's right for you.
I wish you lots of baby dust!!!
ETA: YOu will get a TON of help from the girls here on charting and using OPKs...but please feel free to FMme anytime if you have any questions!! Basically I used OPKs starting around 10-11 days after I got AF and used them until I got a surge line. I charted every day which basically means buying a basal thermometer and taking your temp every morning as soon as you get up BEFORE you get out of bed...and then entering those #s on a chrat www.fertilityfriend.com Fertility Friend is great and its free. Charting your temps helps you figure out when you ovulate.

Re: My story
I have to say that choosing clomid over metformin, is not something I would do.
Metformin is a medication that adjusts insulin. It actually can help the cause of annovulatory cycles and pcos.
Noreen was on met, and she ovulated right after using it :)
Depending on what your blood tests have shown, regarding glucose and insulin resistance....that's how I would make my decision.
There are other reasons why a person only gets their AF 6 times a year, that may not be connected to insulin, glucose, so getting the proper blood tests before choosing a med is essential
Clomid is merely, a med that 'tricks' the body.
I know a lot of women who have pcos and have had tremendous success using metformin, both with weight loss and with ovulation.
You see, if you have insulin resistance, it's very hard to lose weight. It's also hard to ovulate. Correcting the insulin issue,.....is key.
I believe your doctor has you on the right track. Seeing an Re can be a good idea, but I have a different opinion, than Kathy does, about Rsofny. I don't feel they take the time to explain very much. I used to believe they did, but that was several months ago, now they are just too busy.
As far as charting goes, I have no problem helping you with every step if you need. Kathy gave great advice, just get a thermometer and get to it asap :) It's always good to know what your body is up to, so that you can be more empowered, when speaking to your physician.
FM any time. I know how intimidating all these meds and tests seem.
