first week questions

Okay, I am aware that the first day I will be spending 1st and 2nd period with my homeroom and then the day will proceed as scheduled.


I would like to do some introductory games, worksheets the first day and start will all of the "house-keeping" stuff the second day. This way all of my classes will be together.

That brings me to Thursday and Friday. What do you expect from your students the first few days. Do you get right into the curriculum? Do you do "work" or do you continue the rules/procedures/introductory stuff until the first Monday.

Their supplies are "due" on Monday. I would like to introduce our first novel on Monday as well.

I teach seventh grade English. I could do some short stories and things of that sort?

I try to get started with the curriculum asap because I LOATHE all "beginning" stuff like seating, names, lockers, rules blah blah blah

I usually try to get right into it however, this year the schedules are horribly messed up and the school isnt going to start fixing any until the first day of classes. I dont want to start "teaching" and then have new students come into the class a few days later and be behind, then have me have to catch them up... it isnt the student's fault that their schedule was messed up...

so i am trying to think of ideas to stall the first few days... if anyone has any good HS activities, let me know!

I get right into the curriculum on the second day. You have to make sure you can cover as much content as possible before the assessments and the ELA is in January so I would not waste any time. JMO

I get right into it. There's only so much time you can spend doing that other stuff.

Def jump right in! You can continue to model and practice housekeeping and routines stuff as you move along.

I find it difficult to jump right in because often my students change the 1st week or so. Usually I have way to many students programmed into my classes and have no idea who is staying or going. I know that if I hand out books I will never see them again if a students is transfered out. Not to mention all the kids who are still in DR for the first two weeks of school because their parents don't seem to care that school has started! (I teach at a large HS in NYC)
