Resume Length
I'm in the process of updating my resume. I have 8 years experience in my industry with 3 different companies, but six different titles/positions due to promotions at those companies.
My resume is 1 1/2 pages right now...wondering if I should keep editing it down to one page or omit my first position.
How many of you have resumes longer than one page?
TIA!

Re: Resume Length
Mine is two pages in length. I've heard that it is acceptable for a resume to be more than one page in length.
I think yours is fine.

Re: Resume Length
some people told me that a resume should only be 1 page, but I felt that I would be doing myself a disservice if I shortened it. I have 17.5 years of experience in the corporate world. I was at my last job for 11 years and had 4 different jobs there. why wouldn't I list each one separately. these are your professional achievements and you need to let a potential employer know about them ALL.
IMO, it doesn't matter how long your resume is. mine is 1.5 pages and once I start adding my new job to it (I just started my new job 2 weeks ago), my resume will be 2 full pages.

Re: Resume Length
I think it depends on your experience and what you've done.
Someone that is a COO with 25 years experience in an industry I think it's more acceptable his resume be 2 pages where the check out girl at wal-mart that has 2 jobs her resume should be 1 page.
I've been in the corporate industry for 10 years. My first company I was with 5 years but held 2 different positions. The company I was with for 2 1/2 years I held 3 positions and one of them was a supervisor. In between I workd temp jobs with different temp agencies and all of that caused my resume to be long but one of the agencies helped me condense my resume.
I have been able to condense my positions and look at what is really important. I've learned to emphasize on the important functions like "Responsible for training all new customer service representatives, and for developing and implementing operations and policies" more then "ability to work a fax machine" (even though I know their are people who have no clue how to do that) I've gotten my resume to be a little more then a page but managed to get it to a page. Though if I added more things I know it would be over a page.
I think 1 1/2 pages is fine but if you dont have a lot of experience then you should try for 1 page. The hiring manager when reading resumes is probably looking for key things and often doesnt have time to read long resumes. I've worked in HR and I know my boss would just skim them and if they were too long she wouldnt bother.

Re: Resume Length
When I made the transition to 2 pages I made sure all 2 pages were full because I don't like the look of the white space when it is a page and a half. I've been on too many hiring committees lately and I'd say just make sure everything you include is directly relevant. I was reading for high-level positions and some people leave in stuff like working at the movies taking tickets and cleaning bathrooms. Not relevant, and we won't make them clean bathrooms so I really don't care!
To keep mine on 1 page I made the font so tiny that one employer said to me please, go to 2 pages! I got that job, but on my resume I have publications/conferences/research in addition to my jobs (I work in a college).

Re: Resume Length
it depends upon your experience level (8 years of what? what education level? how many committees?). It is standard for most office workers to have 1 pg resumes.... even with BA degrees.
however, if you're like me (a biochemist), 8 years out of school (usually age 40-ish) is usually a 3 pg resume... with grant awards, editorial positions, committee affiliations, teaching experience, and academic society memberships all mentioned)
so, what resumes have you seen of people in a similar position to you? what do they include?

Re: Resume Length
Mine is 2 pages in length as well. I think it depends on the field and the amount of experience you have. It sounds like you have a lot of great experience, so I would keep it at 2 pages. I would not edit out anything, unless it's really not necessary.

Re: Resume Length
i'd keep it to one. you can do something like this to explain your different titles:
first bullet under title: joined company x as (old title) and promoted to (current title) for outstanding blah blah...
Or, just leave your current title only.

Re: Resume Length
I'm up to 3 pages - 2.5 really. Real estate stuff is on page 1 and law firm stuff on page 2 with education & court admissions. I deleted all my publications & public speaking but would add them back if it made sense for the job. That would take me to 3 pages.

Re: Resume Length
I go by the rule of 1 page resumes. You need to capture their interest not bore them with details. Details is for the interview. Like a PP stated make each job and its function to the point and make sure what you are listing is relevant to the position. If you have been in the working world for more than 3 years, I don't see the need to include your GPA and that you were in the Honor Society in college. Leave that for recent graduates. If you are in the medical field or research, I would include published work, etc.
This is just my personal opinion.

Thanks for all the tips! I sent my resume out for three jobs and got call backs on two of them, so the 1 page seems to be working for now.

GPA's may need to be on the resume. It depends on the job. Some law firms still ask for class rank for partners - out of law school for 8 - 10 years or more by that time Many even ask for a law school transcript - even YEARS later which is just absurd...but they do it....
