Day 2 of orientation and .........
oh boy are we in for it I always do orientation for the incoming class, it is a good preview. You would think they would be nervous entering a new school, NOPE. My last group was 16 girls, in this group was a set of twins.
So I start off the thing getting rid of all the rumors- there is not pool, McDonald's does not sell food in the cafeteria, there is not basement and they got rid of the "attic" alternative school a few years ago. One of the twins yells out well if it was still here I would be there. The other twin pipes in me too. I was like what? They were so awful through the tour that I actually introduced them to the dean. Then on Monday day one of orientation. I had a student ask me what happens WHEN we cut class, not IF, but WHEN. I was like this is middle school, it's your funeral. Then I had another one telling me that this tour takes to long and it's cutting into his pool time
I haven't even met all my students yet and I think I am done already

I am alittle confused. Is this an alternative school for troubled teens? What do you teach? Thanks Either way, wow it sounds like you have your hands full

You don't teach in NYC do you?
I taught in a very tough, urban school for a bunch of years, so this story sounds pretty familiar. I feel your pain! They're probably just posturing - showing off for the other kids, trying to get a rep going early. Once classes start and they're little fish in a big pond (and not one of 16 kids on a tour), they should calm down a bit. Probably. Maybe. Good luck!

My student's think that they live in the hood. But sadly it's no where near that it's a nice suburban public school on LI.
The "attic" was the alternative school for our school and it was for the students that we too much a discipline problem to be in the regular classrooms anymore and they were put there with on teacher to teach them all day and only came in for gym and lunch. But that was separate also. The former teacher was a rough guy so the place has a scary reputation for the incoming kids- still. Hope that makes more sense.
