CTT teachers
in NYC
Its true that ESL students can not be placed in a CTT classroom unless they are special ed as well?
Just to make sure - i know in my building that is what we do - but someone i was talking to didn't think that was true and just wanted to see what you all had to say

i would say that they could be placed in a CTT classroom. i taught CTT as the special educator...i had no ESL students, but ESL is NOT special ed. an ESL child would be part of the general ed. portion of the classroom.
some prinicpals may opt NOT to put ESL students in a CTT classroom so as not to have too many other students that need extra support in addition to the special ed. students. on the other hand, some would argue that ESL students would benefit from a CTT classroom (more modeling and various instructional models that would help with language development.

I don't believe that is true. I know sometimes people like to place ESL students in a CTT class thinking they will get extra help because there are 2 teachers and I know the administation tries to deter that because the extra teacher is their for the spec ed kids.

You know what I'm not sure but I would think that only the special needs population should receive any additional services. Meaning the 40% of the students who have IEPS should be the only children receiving special services ESL, OT, PT, SPEECH etc. The 60% general education population should not receive services because wouldn't that be out of compliance?
I'm a CTT teacher ... and my general ed. students do not receive ESL services or any other service for that matter BUT we do get a lot of students who just place out of ESL, who technically should receive services but no longer qualify.

Do you teach a CTT class in the city? If so, what grade? I'm the special education teacher of a 6th grade class in a middle school and co teach with 4 content teachers.

That's what I think happens but regretfully it shouldn't be that at all. The special education students in those classes are extremely deficient and it makes me so upset when they use the CTT classes as "dumping grounds". I feel like I'm spread so thin and do my best to get to each students. It's pretty frustrating. I just wish, in my school, and schools throughout the country took more time making up those classes and using them to benefit the students who need it the most.

And I agree with you, I think they like to do it - and get away with it but it probably states somewhere that its not allowed. Well, I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

It is too much! The belief in my school is that there are two teachers in the room you should be able to handle it all! I never complain because at the end of the day, I feel that I will do whatever it takes to help all of the kids. But I leave in tears most days because its draining.

I do teach CTT (this year) I am spedc ed cert, but im the gen ed teacher. I teach 1st grade
The gen ed students in our class do NOT recieve services, only the spec ed. Last year there was one ESL student in the class but he was also Special Ed.
this came up because we recieved 2 new admits today both non english speaking (im talking - they know very very little english) one might be special ed - hasnt been confirmed yet. but if so we would need a bilingual para. we are trying to find out if they are going to remain in our class.

thats my feeling - they cant just dump all the kids that no one wants in there
we had the problem that we got all the "behavior" students that all the teachers who were looping didnt want in their class again - really fair to the spec ed students - dont ya think?

No problem. I'll ask around tomorrow. Keep me posted on what happens. You know how it is - at the end of the day, they do whatever they can get away with. So difficult for these kids ... I can't imagine how nerveracking it is to be thrown into an english speaking class. On the bright side, they will pick it up very quickly but they really should not be in a CTT class - you have enough on your hands. Best of luck!

I know that happens all the time. Smart thinking too - put the behavioral issues with the easily distracted learning disabled kids - rediculous. In that case, the students with the social issues take all of your time because if you don't have them under control - you don't have a class. My ED kids really are my favorite population but its very difficult to educate a variety of disabilities combined with ED kids. HOwever, they also put the "general education" students who are difficult to deal with - with us too! Isn't that terrible. Seems like you have the same experience. We're miracle workers ...

I have a young girl, this year, with WIlliams Syndrome. Haven't had much exposure but I'm interested to see how it pans out. Her mom is incredibly supportive and a nervous wreck to have her daughter in the middle school. The young girl is as sweet as pie - I hope we can make real progress with her. I am definitely going to advocate as much as I can this year for her and for all the students - I'm speaking up! If in several weeks we start getting new students because the other teachers can't deal - I'm putting my two cents in.
**And don't get me wrong, I dont blame my colleagues for wanted to remove them from their class because these children are touch ... but whats happening is a severe injustice.

This girl was in her 30s but she was incredible her parents were really ontop of her and with getting her any help she needed. She works, wirtes her own checks... etc.. i hope your student turns out the same way!

Glad to hear that! I'm really looking forward to working with her. Its just the first day but once I know her strengths and weaknsses I will be able to tailor instruction to meet her needs. She was popping chicklet gum all day but would never admit it lol like she would put the whole pack in her mouth and not be able to talk but would still say she wasnt chewing gum - in such an innocent way though. Her smile lights up the classroom though and she's very eager. I have high hopes.
It was nice chatting with you ... I'm getting some Zzzzz now ...have a good day tomorrow.

I am on the sped ed. side of a CTT. I have ELL learners on both sides of the fence. Your school is amazing for doing that!!!
