All of the above, as decided by the needs of the individual students.

I think it depends upon the district's policies/model as well...we are encouraged to plan together, implement together...I, as the special education teacher, do all of the modifications, but my assistant and the general education teacher also implement them when I am instructing.

Re: IMO, the role of the Special Education teacher in an inclusion classroom is...

In my district, the philosophy of the inclusion program is to have both teachers plan together and team teach.

We do not create separate plans and take students out and teach them separately. The philosophy is that the students need the additional support of the inclusion classroom. We only take students out of the room to administer testing modifications.

We also do not modify the work in the classroom for individual students. Our belief that if a student is placed in an inclusion classroom they should be able to handle the work with the additional support that is in place. It also depends on the type of students you are teaching.

ETA: I teach HS so it is very different than elementary school.

I'm sure some of you know from my recent posts that I wish any of the above happened in my classroom! We have a meeting with the APs to "discuss" the disaster that my inclusion class is on tuesday.

Callan, I responded to your poll as "all of the above." i do ALL of those things. but because of my kids (they are 12:1:1 type of kids, but we don't have 12 so they push-in part of the day) so i really do a good deal of pull-out and modifying when i push-in.

a true inclusion (where the kids are in all day), you should be doing the middle choice: plan together and differntiate.... it's soo hard to do that.

i will FM oyu later, girl! :)

Re: IMO, the role of the Special Education teacher in an inclusion classroom is...

absolutely all of the above!!

my coteacher and i do all of those things...some things we plan separately and she modifies, some things we plan together and we both modify, sometimes we EACH pull a small group to work with (gen and sp ed kids), and sometimes we just have one plan and make modifications to DI to a particular group.

each teacher is responsible for ALL students.

I'm the general ed teacher in the inclusion class, and the special ed teacher I work with does LITERALLY NOTHING except for taking attendance and stand around. What's she going to do when I call in sick?? Drives me crazy Chat Icon

The teacher you collaborate with is terrible? That is a shame. Have you spoken to her or your administrator?

I wish people (administrators) would realize the the program is only successful when both teachers are interested in teaching together and participating in the program.

I am sorry to hear that. That is definitely not the best environment for the students. Chat Icon

it's really not. I have a meeting on the 27th so I have a whole list of topics to speak about with a few people in the room with us. I'll let you know how it goes!

Re: IMO, the role of the Special Education teacher in an inclusion classroom is...

I feel as though the inclusion teacher I work with does nothing. I want his job. He sits on the side as I teach and watches the students. I am the one who walks around the class making sure everyone is taking notes. When I give out a worksheet or do an activity, only then does he circulate around the room. i have observed inclusion rooms before and there always seems to be more interaction between the two teachers. I am new so I do not want to tell him how to do his job, but I really think there is a lot more to being an inclusion teacher.
