when to do IVF

For those of you who have graudated to IVF. When and why did you make the decision to take the next step. We are considering it for next month if this months IUI fails and I already made a consultation appointment. But I am so worried about making the right decision. I am not sure if I am being realistic or just anxious. Chat Icon

Re: when to do IVF

we made the decision, because of my age and the doctor is concerned about my fsh numbers. And since i did 5 iui's with no success, i was getting frustrated.

It is scary in the beginning but something that you do get through. We have tried two ivf cycles but had no success either. We will try one more time. Sometimes it does take a few cycles for it to work, like Brooke Shields, but I think there will be a point in my life when I can't go through it anymore.

I have seen ivf work for many people i know.

I wish you luck in whatever decision you make. Don't give up.

Re: when to do IVF

we did it because we did 6 unsuccessful IUI's...I wish I didnt wait that long.
So we decided to do IVF..plus we had the coverage too.

Re: when to do IVF

I had surgery to remove one tube (totally blocked), and to repair the other. We did 2 unsuccessful IUI's, and then found out that the other tube was blocked again. So I had surgery to have it cauterized shut, and moved on to IVF.

I just got this reponse on another board from an andrology expert.

"If there is a sperm problem, do not waste your time on IUI's. They are extremely ineffective as a treatment for sperm problems"

Looks like we are leaning more towards IVF if we have another failure this month.

Re: when to do IVF

Like Rosanna, I have an issue with FSH so I was told that my chances w/ IUI were the same as me & DH trying naturally (slim to none)

I had one IVF cycle converted to an IUI and am now presently 6 days into a 2nd IVF cycle.

I wish you and your DH much luck if you go this route, also with male issues you can do ICSI, which may up your chances tremendously.

Much baby dust to you!!

With me, it was a "beat the clock" thing. I had suffered a M/C then a failed IUI. My RE felt I'd have a better chance of a healthy PG if we had more eggs to look at and work with.

When you finally decide you are ready for IVF, just make sure you pick a clinic with good results.
I found that they can actually vary greatly. Most clinics report their results to the CDC and it is then published on their webiste. I know every clinic isn't the same when it comes to treatment protocols but I found this a helpful tool and IVF is so expensive. I wanted to make sure I was spending my money wisely. I know LI IVF has great results and so does NYU. Good Luck!Chat Icon

Re: when to do IVF

thanks, I have checked this out and I wish there was somehting mroe recent than 2002. My clinic's success rate is actually pretty low so it is one of the things I will have to talk to them about. I may make a consult elsewhere. Right now, my insurance will cover about 3 IVFs there, so if I cant find someplace else that takes this insurance I may give them a try anyway.

thanks for the advice

Re: when to do IVF

You may want to try Kleiner - East Coast Fertility. I have heard from friends that they are pretty good about taking insurance and their success rates are better than RSONY (not sure if that's your clinic but I know many women on this board go there).

I don't have insurance so I went with LI IVF. They have some of the best stats I have seen on LI.

Best of luck to you.

Re: when to do IVF

I think East Coast infertility uses the same lab as RSofNY and that's a problem.

I have GHI insurance...and I just called Cornell Weill, yesterday. Since two of their doctors accept ghi, they may accept my insurance. I know they don't take oxford, that I asked, since my dh has oxford. I would call and see....

Of course, I have Oxford. LI IVF also has really good success rates (48.1), I have to find out if they take Oxford.

Re: when to do IVF

Kreiner used RS of NY's lab when I went, all my retrievals and transfers were there. I think he has now opened his own lab.

Re: when to do IVF

my dr told me it takes so long to gather results for the cdc b/c it takes a year to gather birth data and a year for the cdc to compile it and publish it.
I looked into Kreiner but his data on his website is from 1/04 I think when he was still using rs of ny. So I don't know how he is doing now and I heard such great things about LI-IVF and they have been around for over 15 yrs. Good Luck with which ever one you choose.

Re: when to do IVF

thanks everyone, today I made an appt for a consult with NSUH. The 2002 stats were32.9% (better than RSNY (19.7) but their website now says they have 49% success rate and THEY DO TAKE OXFORD.

I feel like I am cheating on my RE, but I want results!!!!!

Good luck Pauline !!! I don't think you are cheating on your RE at all. I happen to think you will be in better hands.
