Shelter volunteers

I am thinking of vounteering at a shelter a few blocks from me. You know what is holding me back? How sensitive I am. I feel like I will be in tears every time I go and want to take them all home. I am SUPER sensitive Chat Icon Any advice?

I do it, and yes, sometimes you end up feeling really bad but most times, you feel really good. It is so worth the time. Usually, I walk the dogs and spend some time playing with them. I brush and clean them up. They love it and it gets them out of their cages. You can also help with the adoptions because propsective adopters will ask you for your opinions and you can really sell the dogs.

Where are you thinking of volunteering?

Re: Shelter volunteers

I say go for it. You will feel so good about all the animals you are helping.

Best of luck:)

Re: Shelter volunteers

Thank you Chat Icon

I live in NJ so the shelter is called The Plainfield Area Humane Society. I think I may visit one day, just to see what my feelings are.

Re: Shelter volunteers

Jen, my sister volunteered at North Shore here on LI. SHe has 2 dogs, so ...she said she knew she couldn't take any of them home, so she was glad to just to help the puppies. She did quit eventually because she was not treated nicely by the regular employees, and got all the crappiest jobs while paid employees sat around and got paid for doing nothing...she got fed up.

Hope your experience is better, I am sure it will be!!!
